‘Ma’am, we’re not sure if it’s going to make it…’ the doctor said. ‘It has to, it has to!’ the woman said. ‘It’s the only thing I’ve got, it can’t die!’  The doctor was a little surprised by those words.  ‘I think it’s already too late…’

The woman started to cry when she heard those words. Her baby, the only thing that was really hers, the only thing that she could love with all her heart without being hurt. It couldn’t die! ‘I’m sorry,’ the doctor didn’t knew what to do either. The woman touched the face of her baby. It was colder than she expected. It was dead. She buried her face in her hands and cried. And the tears didn’t stop coming. Another woman, in the same part of the hospital, sighed. ‘I feel so sorry for them,’ she said. ‘Who are you talking about?’ a man –probably her husband– asked. ‘Both of the poor things. I can imagine how much that might hurt. But I also feel sorry for these two,’ she pointed at the baby girl and boy that lay on the bed next to them. ‘We just can’t afford it, you know that,’ he explained. She understood. It was not fair. On this section children died. On this section children were born. On this section, twins were born. It was unfair. ‘Maybe we should ask her,’ the man started. The woman nodded. They couldn’t afford raising two children. The man walked over, asked if he may talk to her. The woman was still crying, but stopped when she saw the friendly man. ‘Is something wrong?’ she asked as strong as she could. There was so much wrong with her, though. ‘Well,’ he started. He explained everything. He explained his woman got twins but they couldn’t afford raising two children. He explained he heard that her baby died moments ago. He explained his wife came up with the idea to let the woman adopt one of the children. The woman began to smile. ‘I’d love to adopt one of them,’ she said. She would give the baby more love you’d ever seen before. She would do everything for the baby. And she would name the girl Cherry. Cherry Rivers.
