Today was quite cool for an Avondale summer, I laid on the couch, my head elevated on the armchair and I watched the fan above me spin and spin and spin.

Half of the stuff in our house were antiques previous owners left behind that my parents didn't end up discarding. We had these weird floral cut-outs on the outer edges of the living-room fan and they made a strange pattern as the fan blurred.

Mum and Dad were off with their friends for a few hours and I was alone, in my house, on my couch watching the fan spin around, on a Saturday.

I would be lying if I said I had changed and grown and learned lessons along the way ever since I moved to Avondale Heights. I would be lying if I said my days were filled with danger and excitement. Im content, though.

It was now summer break which was for everyone, including me, the best time of the year. As of two days ago everyone was outside either celebrating or sailing. I wasn't doing either. The world around me just kept shifting and I stayed the same.

Something unceremoniously hit my face.

"Lor, summer has just started and you're on the couch."

I ignore the grumbling voice I sense hovering above me from the side of the couch. I calculate her location and throw the mini sized softball back in her direction. I calculated wrong and it landed on my stomach with a thud. I winced but tried to hide it.

She started laughing.

"You know it's not all that flattering lying on the couch like that. It brings out your double chin."

Black annoyance and slight insecurity pervading my insides. "No it doesn't." I shot up and scowled at my best friend, Carly Windsor before touching my neck in defence.

She smirked and tucked a dead straight strand of hair away from her face and behind her ear. "Get your ass up, we're going to get some lunch and scout out the hot guys. Corey's in the car waiting, come on."

"I'm not dressed to go out." I complained, turning to get off the couch. I looking down at my long shirt and ripped shorts.

"You look absolutely fine. Come on." Carly had styled her hair and carefully picked out her grey crop-top and black shorts. I had selected the first two items of clothes in my drawer.

Carly took my hand and directed me to the door like I was a toddler and couldn't find my way there myself. It was only then that I heard Corey's bass boosted music. Corey, or the hotter Windsor twin in my opinion, nonchalantly looked out the window. When he saw us finally leave the house he hollered and waved.

I was quick to call shotgun and get in the passenger seat. Corey raised his hand for me to high-five, when I did Carly dragged her feet to the back. She muttered under her breath how immature calling 'shot-gun' at this age was.

"That is what you get for ruining my Saturday plans."

"What plans? You needed this, now let's go we're heading to Amy's coffee-shop."

Amy's coffee shop was a fan favourite in town and Carly and I always talked about going to get something to eat when all of the hot surfers were there but never did. Today it seemed that we were finally building up the nerve.

"We're actually going?" I asked her, slightly shocked.

"Yep this summer we're going to make some changes," she said to me grinning before turning to her brother and aggressively hitting the back of his seat. "Now let's go, go, go."

Corey sighed, stepped on the accelerator and we were off.
