Sometimes I catch myself lying down on the freshly cut green grass in my backyard, where I look up at the clouds and watch them form into different figures. I always think about the strange and unusual disappearance of my brother, Scott Kindle. Scott was only 7 years old and since I was four years older than him, I was supposed to take care of him. I remember it like it was yesterday, we were both at the donut shop. I never remembered the name. All we were doing was getting some donuts for my family back home, but once I received my donuts, I couldn't find him anywhere, all that was left of him was the silver watch he always wore. That was the last time I ever saw him.
"Honey come back inside," my Mother calls for me. She's wearing a light purple dress that went to her ankles with an apron around her waist, but she stopped wearing her bright smile. Ever since the strange disappearance of Scott she won't leave me alone. Yes, I love my mother but still, can't I go into the backyard by myself for a few minutes?
"Alright," I get up off the ground, stretching all my stiff muscles. Walking up the steps of my front porch I take one final breath of the fresh air and step inside.
Inside the house I sit down at the kitchen table, I look to my left and see my father stressed out and reading police reports about Scott. He has a cigarette in his mouth and dark circles around his eyes. He reeks of sweat and hasn't changed clothes in days. Even though he doesn't look directly at you, you could tell that he hasn't been able to sleep. Mother then gives me a light pink bowl to feed my sister. As I feed her, I think back to the event. There must have been a clue or something to study. Then I remember. He left his watch on the counter beside me. He was going to the restroom. He never returned, maybe I should go back and see if there is a clue back at the shop.
After I finish feeding Ella I put on my shoes and leave. I'll probably get in trouble for leaving later because Mother is paranoid. I need to know what really happened. At the shop I see a group of men in business suits with briefcases. One of them has a very serious look, a suit and tie that matches perfectly. The others give me a glance and smirk while looking me up and down.
"Medium size, chocolate, with extra sprinkles." The head businessman said. The waitress gives them a slight nod and leads them into the back of the shop. I continue to look at donuts and their infinite choice of toppings when I hear a screech from the back of the shop. That's when the businessmen walk out with a little girl who looks like about medium size, maybe 7 or 8, with dark brown hair and a beautiful face feature. Her eyes, a light brown, but full of fear. She gives me scared glance as if she wants me to leave before I can get in any trouble.
"You look like you've seen a ghost dear," the waitress says giving me an unsure look. I shack my hear and exit the shop before I see anything else. When I step outside into the cool foggy air, I see a dark blue car in the parking lot with the businessmen and watch as they struggle to shove the little girl in the car. They give me one more blood-boiling look and I run back home as fast as I can to go tell Mother and Father what I've seen.
Out of breath, I swing open the door and quickly look for Mother. I then see her and Father and Ella all sleeping on the couch. I don't want to be a bother and walk quietly to my room. What happen back there? I think to myself. I wasn't supposed to see that. No, I didn't see it. I just thought it. It's just my wild imagination still trying to cope with the fact that Scott is gone. I only have one way to prove it. I need to go back to the shop and order the same thing but what if the same thing happens to me?
"Are you okay honey?" Mother asks as she enters through the door. I still have the petrified look upon my face. I don't know if I should tell her. But she needs to know.
"I saw a girl at that donut shop getting kidnapped!" This probably sounds like nonsense. What is even the point in telling her if I have no proof?
She gives me a startled and confused look, "Donut shop? You mean Sweet Bakes? That place is the safest place here in England. I know it's hard to cope with this horrible event that has happened. I promise you; we will find him."
