Where did I go wrong?

The sound of the water gushing in the river and the wind whooshing by was ringing in my ears, but the only thing on my mind was, 'Where did I go wrong?'

I was usually meticulous in planning and cautious in execution. I prided myself in my ability to survive and think on my feet. It was the only thing I knew. Yet, it had failed me today. As I lie here looking at the expanse of darkness in the sky, I felt a sense of trepidation. It was as if this was the beginning of something truly horrible.

I tried to move, but I couldn't. I can't tell if I was physically incapacitated or if it was just the pain in my head that kept me immobile. I heard the rustling of the leaves before I felt the men walking near me. This was bad. I was prepared for the possibility of things not going my way, but this was worse than anything I had conjured up in my head.

I remained stationary on the ground and kept my breathing still, hoping the interlopers would assume I was dead. Unfortunately, they weren't as stupid as I hoped they would be.

"Here she is!" shouted a man, whom I think is a soldier. There were more footsteps now, and I could tell there was an audience. I was in no shape to fight, and there were too many of them to begin with. This was so not my day. I should've just passed out on my couch. Instead, here I was, pretending to be dead in the middle of a forest.

"Is she dead?" asked another man with a gravelly voice.

"Who cares? Let's just take her to the king." was the answer from far away.

And so, I was carried off to meet the man who was the epitome of viciousness and ferocity.  Someone whose name instilled fear in the hearts and minds of the people. Enough to scare even the most dangerous of creatures, like me.

I was feeling more disoriented than I'd like, especially on a night that could potentially be my last. I took in my surroundings. The sound of the flowing water, the rustling of trees, the footsteps harsh on the forest's floor, the birds in the distance and even the faint outline of the enormous palace that loomed in front of me.

There were a lot of things in my life that I regret doing, but tonight was certainly at the top of my list.
