Chapter 11: Driver

"Miss Sasaki's abduction was even easier, wasn't it?" Dazai chimed in, "after she collapsed at the train station a good Samaritan passing by paid for her cab ride to the hospital. It's faster than calling an ambulance to the train station, isn't it?"

"Their intelligence never ceases to amaze me," you chuckled at Atsushi, who was staring at his mentors with a dumbfounded look on his face.

"That's all circumstantial evidence," the driver replied to Kunikida and Dazai.

"I suppose." Dazai sighed as he laid back in the car seat again, "guess we got nothing. What's your move now, Kunikida?"

"Come on," Kunikida scowled, "are you being serious right now?"

"How about we all make a deal," the driver decided.

You leaned in and asked, "what do you mean?"

The driver reasoned, "if you agree to my conditions I'll turn myself in. I need the assurance of the Armed Detective Agency. You have to keep me safe until the prosecution concludes their questioning and arranges witness protection for me!"

"Oh, don't tell me," you gasped, leaning back again. He probably abducted the wrong person. Could it possibly be...

"It wasn't my idea to do this job," the driver explained, "I was approached by a new organ smuggling ring who told me this was a great opportunity and I'd never get caught. Those liars!"

Kunikida exclaimed, "so there's a group behind all this? Do you know where they are?"

"Sadly, no," the driver admitted, "I was always instructed to meet them in the harbor central building."

"That must be it," Kunikida sighed.

"One question," Dazai spoke up, "why do you need our protection? Just what group are you speaking of?"

You looked at him and asked, "you seriously don't know? And here I was thinking you were all intelligent." You turned to the driver and leaned back in the middle seat. "I'll let you do the grand reveal, Mr. Innocent Taxi Driver."

The driver muttered, "it appears that one of the people I abducted was actually with the Port Mafia..."

"How unfortunate," Dazai commented as a smirk crossed his face.

Suddenly, you heard bullets quickly pierce through the windows of the car, aimed at anyone they could see. Although Dazai tried to force your head down, you felt a small bullet enter the back of your neck. It was clearly not a bullet made to kill, but no one knew that. The reason behind the bullet not being lethal was unbeknownst to you. The edge of your vision grew dark and your mouth turned dry as you started hanging limp in the back seat. You were still conscious, but didn't know how much longer you had.

"(Y/N)!" Dazai seemed to notice the blood coming from behind your neck as he looked at his hand that had touched the area you had been shot in, only to draw it back and find it was covered in blood. Everything started coming back to him.

"I'm through with watching the people I love rush into danger. You need to stop caring about other people and actually try to protect yourself. The world is a cruel place and humanity doesn't care for anyone and anything. People like you are the only ones who give me hope for the future. People like you are a reason to live. Do you want to know about an old friend of mine? You remind me of him everyday. I miss him more than you could possibly imagine. And I'm just worried you'll meet the same fate as him. You see, his name was-"

BANG!

"ODASAKU!"
