"Wow, you guys can all sing so well!" I gushed after the song ended. They all had beautiful voices, especially John. Alex loved to sing dramatically. "Who would've ever thought," I laughed.
"Hey, now it's your turn! Hand over the tambourine!" Alex grinned.
"Uh," I cleared my throat nervously, "I don't know many songs..."
"Well, sing one you do know, duh," Herc said.
"Oh come on, they're implying they're nervous, dude," John hit him in the shoulder.
"It's fine," I said, not wanting to be a party-pooper.
I chose a song called History Has Its Eyes On You. I told them it's the words of George Washington that I created a melody to.
"Ohhh, I think I know which document you're talking about," Alex said. "Ok, go on now!"
I started at the beginning, singing the memorized words General Washington addressed to one of his fellow soldiers.
"I was younger than you are now when I was given my first command. I led my men straight into a massacre. I witnessed their deaths first hand. I made every mistake. I felt the shame rise in me. And even now, I lie awake knowing history has its eyes on me. Let me tell you what I wish I had known when I was young and dreamed of glory: you have no control who lives, who dies, who tells your story. I know that we can win. I know that greatness lies in you. But remember from here on in, history has its eyes on you," I sang.
They all just sat there for a moment, their faces turning bright red. I looked down in embarrassment.
"Wow," Alexander sighed, "you really put emotion and power into those words. Every single phrase hit me like a bus...," he chuckled.
What's a bus?
"You have a beautiful voice, Y/N," Hercules said.
John smacked him on the head, "I wanted to say that."
We just love hitting each other, don't we?
Lafayette laughed, "Comme ils dirent, tu as une belle voix, chèrie."
"Why did you call them 'dear,'" John pointed at Laf accusingly.
"No, he said 'dirent,'" I spelled it out for him. "It's a French word meaning 'say.' You know French pronunciation is different from English phonetics."
"But...," Alex trailed off.
"No! Don't speak!" I put my finger to his mouth and shushed him. His face went red again. Whoops, I didn't mean to embarrass him again. I'm bad at this whole friend thing.
He did call me dear, but they don't need to know that. It's funny if you think about it. I'm sure Laf was just being nice anyway.
Alex just grinned. "Whatever you say," and he looked up to the side.
"Ok, something's up, but whatever," John rolled his eyes at Laf and Alex.
Suddenly the coach hit a bump in the road, and my row got dumped out of our seats and into the middle.
"Sorry about that, everyone," the driver said.
"You could've warned us!" I shouted back.
It was a little hard to get up in the moving coach, but I managed after Laf pulled me by the arm back into the seat.
"You guys good?" Alex asked as he leaned forward to look leftwards at us.
"Yeah...," I laughed, "just banged my knee when I hit the floor. I'm tough, though. You can count on that."
