Chapter 3: Trust

I tap on the screens, trying to pull up information about the crew. I didn't know how to operate it since no one taught me! I tried not to smack the console in annoyance since there were peole in the room. I would ask the computer to pull it up, but it would be weird if to say "Hey computer! Pull up the personal info about the crew!" While some of the crew is here.

The only thing I've learned so far was who is in charge of what and their skillset.

Judy is in charge of Cryo, so there are this universe's Celci.

Kai handles Life Support.

Roderick knows how to navigate, so he must be pretty good at reading maps and directions. Maybe he was this universe's Gunther, but I wasn't too sure.

Gabriel was sent to handle the reactor, so he might be this universe's Burt.

And Mack… He replaces Mar-

"How ya doing, Captain?"

"AH!" I go to smack whoever scared me out of reflex, but whoever it was caught my wrist.

"Woah there, Captain! It's just me." Said Mack as he lets go of my wrist. I resist the urge to smack him again. He is SO lucky the crew is here and already starting at us.

I glared at him and fix the cuff of my sleeve, the one he grabbed. "What do you need?"

Mack raised his hands up. "Wow, Captain!" He laughs. "No need to be hostile. I was just wondering how you were doing? You seemed pretty frantic when coming back from the reactor."

I rolled my eyes. "Nothing of your concern. Get back to work." I turn back to the console and stared at the screens.

"Um, I'm pretty sure my Captain's well being is of concern."

I scoff. "The only reason you care about my well being is looking for an excuse for you to take my place." I heard Mack sigh, but I didn't release my gaze from the screens. "Look, maybe we got off on the wrong foot. But we both have the same goal in mind."

"Oh yeah?" I said monotoned. "What's that?"

"We want to bring our crew and the colonists to a habitable planet and start a new life."

I looked at Mack from the corner of my eyes. Yes he was right, but I still don't trust him. He's given me no reason to and how should I know this isn't another manipulation tactic?

I turned my body toward Mack, giving him my full attention. "Look, Mack. I don't know what game you think you're playing, but you can give up the nice act. I'm not going to give up my position just because you don't think I'm worthy. I was put on this ship for a reason and I'm not going to let a narcissistic asshole stop me from doing my job."

Mack sighs through his nose, shoulders tense, as he stared at me. I stared back, unblinking.

He then turned around and walked away without saying another word. I went back to trying to figure out the controls of the ship. I sighed defeated and asked the computer "Computer, can you please pull up the crew information on the bridge console please?"

"Pulling up Crew IDs."

I saw an array of profiles appear on the screen on front of me. "Thank you!"

"You're welcome, Captain."

I spent the rest of my time reading up on the crew. Learning about their names, skillset, background, everything. 'I won't fail them. I will save them. They will be safe. We will find a home. No one is going to stop me. I'll make sure of it.'
