It hadn't even been a full twenty-four hours since Jade had met Emerald in her flower shop. Nevertheless, she couldn't get the rabbit out of her head. Jade laid out on her fluffy comforter. A checkered bumblebee yellow and ashy gray. She glared at the vibrant yellow spaces in it. The color felt mocking. What did it mean? surely Emerald wasn't her soulmate was she? there was no such thing. Jade huffed. She'd just visit one more time. Then she could forget the rabbit. The rabbit with the charming smile and honey blonde hair.
As Jade raked her hands in her short hair she sent a text to Emerald, "Hey, you need a wolfish ladder today boss lady?~"
Emerald sat in a coffee shop. She grinned down at her phone, "A wolfish ladder WOULD be nice," she replied.
"So my job begins now?"
"I'm not paying you"
"lawbreaker~"
"Unless you're serious about the gift cards and iced coffee,"
Jade smirked. She rummaged in the sea of clothes strewn on her floor for something suitable, "And if I was?" she replied. She slipped on a simple smoky black dress with long sleeves on the sides of her shoulders, "What then boss lady?" she asked as she slipped on a pair of fishnet stockings and the boots from the previous day. She could still smell the pleasant scent of flowers stuck in the faux leather.
Emerald chuckled, "Then I suppose you're getting paid wolfie," she replied. She smiled, "In fact, meet me at the coffee shop I'm at?"
"Ah yes, let me check the eighty or so coffee shops that I am aware of~"
Emerald rolled her eyes. The wolf was so infuriating. In the best way possible. She chuckled, "Three-eighty-five Maple Street," she clarified. "Just about three blocks from Pots & Petals," she added.
"You got it, boss lady~"
Emerald chuckled. She typed her next reply with much less hesitance, unlike yesterday, "Good girl." she clicked her phone shut after that.
Jade growled lowly. Emerald would be her downfall. She was sure of it.
After a short walk, Jade was walking into a small coffee shop. This shop was microscopic compared to Pots & Petals. Her muscles relax at the familiar scent of coffee in the air. Her violet eyes roamed the small room looking for Emerald. Her fur bristled upon seeing her, Emerald was mid-laugh talking with another person sitting beside her nursing a mug of indistinguishable liquid. An owl with silver feathers and light stormcloud gray feathers closer to the face and on their fingers. They had a blueish-black beak. They had a side-swept haircut of dirty blonde with highlights of cyan matching their cyan eyes rested in a small pair of black-framed square glasses. They wore a simple black dress. Lacey flowers were sewn into the chest and long sleeves. They had on a simple pair of faded indigo jeans under the ruffled layered skirt. They wore a simple pair of black sneakers.
Jade felt an icy stab of jealousy in her chest as she strode over, "He-Hey bunny," she said tightly.
Emerald grinned. She set her cup down, "Jade, hey!" she giggled sweetly.
Jade shook her thoughts away, "Hey boss lady," she said walking over. She flinched as the owl kicked a chair out from under the table for her.
"Your chair wolfie~" they hummed.
Jade growled "Don't call me that!" she huffed.
"But doesn't Em call you that a lot?" they chuckled.
Jade huffed again, "Anyway," she said. She crossed one leg over the other, "Who's your..." her eyes rake over the owl quietly, "friend," she finished.
Emerald smiled "O-Oh," she lit up. She fixed her minty green sweater. She flourished her paws toward the owl dramatically, "This is Zyx," she introduced. "Was one of my first customers who took a chance on my pride arrangements when I was starting out," she explained.
"They were worth it, I'm told they're pretty" they shrugged. "At least they smell nice," they mused.
Jade's ears perked up at that, "So, you haven't?" she trailed off expectantly.
"Nah, you?" they asked.
Jade dared a microscopic glance at Emerald. Same honey blonde hair, mocking her, "No-Nope," she grumbled. She cleared her throat, "You got any pronouns?" she asked.
Zyx laughed, "Ah such eloquence~" they teased. They held up their hands as Jade growled. "Alright alright, don't maul me wolfy," they quipped, "If you MUST know I go by he and they," they said.
Jade nodded, "Got it, I get it wrong punch me," she said.
Emerald's ears droop "Hey now, no one is punching anyone!" she laughed.
Jade huffed, "Aww c'mon boss lady... just one, I can be your security!~" she laughed.
Emerald laughed as well, "I don't need security,"
"Not in a random coffee shop anyway," Zyx mused.
"Zyx sweetie, we are in a business meeting," Emerald teased.
Zyx hummed, "Ah I see well, I shall grab refills, what do you want wolfie,"
Jade glared, "Jade," she corrected.
Zyx smirked hand on their hip, "Do you want a drink or not?" they asked.
"Course I do bird brain,"
"Then I shall call you what I wish," they chuckled. They raised their free hand as Jade opened her mouth, "Unless you wanna pay for your own coffee?" they offered.
Jade shrunk into her chair pouting, "No," she mumbled ears flicked back.
Zyx smiled, "See, was that so hard?" they teased. "how do you take it?" they asked.
"Ooh," Emerald clapped.
Jade chuckled, "Yes bunny?~"
"Let me guess!" she begged.
Jade chuckled again, "Ok, shoot your shot boss lady," she smiled.
"When's the wedding?" Zyx asked.
Both Emerald and Jade brushed the comment aside, "So, let me think..." Emerald hummed, "I'm thinkin'" she leaned forward, pressed slightly on the table.
It took everything she had for Jade not to stare at her slightly raised hips, "Mm, what are ya thinking bunny?" she asked.
"Mm, I'm thinkin' mostly black with a splash of sugar?" she offered.
Jade flinched. She broke into a soft grin, "That's actually right," she chuckled.
"Yes!" Emerald cheered. She fell back into her chair. She grinned a small smug smile.
"That what you want?" Zyx asked.
Jade nodded, "Yes please,"
"Another hot cocoa for you boss lady?"
Emerald smiled, "Yes please," she said as well. She chuckled, "thank you, sweetie," she added.
Zyx saluted with two fingers, "Course,"
Zyx strode across the room sneakers squeaking lightly on the tile. The counter seemed to be unmanned at first glance. Peering over they saw a bent-over figure. They knocked on the plastic surface of the counter.
"One sec!" the figure said panicked. Voice soft with a slight rasp. The figure lurched up tall and hunched lightly. They kept their eyes on the cups they lined up. A tall Jackal. They fixed the cups gently, "S-Sorry I was just--" their eyes widened when they gazed into Zyx's cyan eyes. Zyx's eyes widened as well. Zyx's world splashed with color as their eyes met. The jackal had deep russet-colored fur with jet black hair with a neon yellow streak in the bangs. The jackal's eyes were like melted gold. They wore a stud of silver in their ear a second piercing lower with the stripes of the non-binary flag. They wore a bright yellow shirt a jean jacket and black jeans. Their right eye was lined in neon yellow eyeliner that curled down and slightly to the left curling softly at the end.
Zyx smiled, "S-So," they chuckled a soft sense of relief flooding him, "you got a name?" they asked.
"A-Ash, you good sir?~" they asked.
"Zyx," Zyx grinned. "any pronouns?"
Jade laughed lowly, "Ah such eloquence," she whispered to Emerald who giggled.
"They and them please," Ash said long frizzy tail wagging quickly. They chuckled, "And you?~" they asked.
"He and they please," Zyx said his fingers pushing up his glasses lightly.
Ash smiled "S-So I guess we-we're..."
Zyx smiled in return, "Ye-Yeah," they giggled.
Ash gave a bright fanged grin, "Anyway, you need anything pretty bird?"
Zyx's feathers ruffled voice shy all of the sudden, "St-Stooop!~" they squealed. He chuckled clearing his throat "Ahem a-anyway," they stammered, "I would like a hot chocolate, an earl gray tea, and a coffee with light amounts of sugar please,"
Ash nodded. They turned to the coffee machines whirring in the background, "And I wouldn't mind your number" they mused as they got to work.
Zyx blushed. He smiled, "Sheesh, buy me dinner first," they huffed.
Ash laughed. They turned stirring the hot chocolate with a thin stick gripped in their claws gently, "That could be arranged,"
Zyx smirked, "Oh really?" they asked.
Ash nodded, "I DO get off in about three hours, we could have the rest of the night if you want?" they said pouring tea into a cup.
Zyx nodded, "I think I'd like that," they smiled.
Ash nodded, "Mm, got it," they scribbled something on the plastic teacup. They set the three cups up in a neat row claws clicking against the register. They smiled, "That'll be five dollars seventy-five cents please," they said.
Zyx dug for his wallet. He faked a pout, "Do I not get a soulmate discount?"
Ash laughed, "That is not a sound business practice," they tease "sorry, no exceptions,"
Zyx handed over the money, "Rude," he huffed.
Ash slid the cups onto a small tray handing it over, "I'll pay ya back later~" they assured
"I'm holding you to that~" Zyx said. With that, he turned, carrying the tray to the woman waiting for him.
Jade smirked grabbing the coffee and taking a greedy sip, "So," she began "when's the wedding?" she mocked.
Zyx ruffled his feathers. "Oh shush!" they huffed.
"So you have a date?!~" Emerald beamed.
"Mm, more like a business meeting," he said sipping his tea.
Jade cut in smirking, "Yeah but most business meetings don't have the chance of you fuckin' at the end,"
"They don't?~" Emerald asked jokingly.
Jade nearly choked on her coffee, "Wh-What?!"
Emerald smirked. She coyly sipped her cocoa, "I mean every one I've read has them end that way," she joked.
"Right?" Zyx said "according to most trashy young adult novels it is an inevitability," he shrugged. Both Emerald and Zyx laughed quietly.
Jade smiled. Her tail wagged slowly, "I hate both of you,"
Emerald smirked, "I could always fire you?" she offered.
Jade shook her head, "Nah, I need the coffee and gift cards," she said.
"Then shush."
"Yes ma'am,"
"Good girl," Emerald hummed.
Zyx groaned, "Will you two just go get a room already,"
"No," Emerald and Jade said in unison.
After nearly half an hour Jade and Emerald were off down the street leaving Zyx to chat and flirt with Ash. Emerald used Jade as a ladder to reach the higher vases and to fetch flowers from the garden in the back. Jade had helped where she could. She had grabbed a vase fat-bottomed and short as Emerald cut white roses and yellow sunflowers. She gaped down at it. Light blue bled across the glassy surface.
Emerald tapped her shoulder, "Wolfy?"
Jade jolted. She gripped the vase tighter out of reflex, "Y-Yes?" she squeaked.
Emerald took the vase. She set it on the counter, "Are you ok?" she asked worriedly.
Jade gave a tense smile. She smoothed the rabbit's blonde hair gently, "Ye-Yeah of course bunny," she assured
Emerald frowned, "You just seem.. off," she pouted.
"And you know me well enough to know when I'm off?" Jade quipped.
Emerald shrugged, "I would like to think so," she said simply. She pulled the wolf woman into a hug.
Jade's fur stood up as she melted. She growled lightly. She nuzzled into the rabbit's hair gently, "Wa-Warm~" she mumbled.
Emerald giggled, "Cute," she mumbled. She smiled, "say, I've no orders left after this one," she nodded to the vase, "I've really been wanting sweets, I know this really cute shop if you want your first paycheck,"
Jade shrugged, "Sure, why not?" she said. "you got it, boss lady," she added.
"Yay!" she cheered.
After her orders were set up the two left for the shop Emerald led the way practically dragging the wolf down the streets. Jade stumbled after the rabbit laughing "slow down," she pleaded.
Emerald slowed to a more agreeable speed. Her ears droop shyly, "S-Sorry wolfie," she whispered.
Jade chuckled, "It's fine bunny, the night is young," she growled happily.
Emerald pet the wolf's ear delicately, "And so are we," she added quietly.
"I-Indeed," Jade gulped.
Their eyes met and Emerald drew closer. She felt a small twist of sadness. Did Jade really not see it? was it something to do with her? were one-sided soulmates a thing?
Jade looked wildly worried and unsure. She'd knelt on one knee to meet her height, "B-Bunny?" she asked hoarsely.
Emerald jolted. It was only then she realized Jade gripping her shoulders tightly, "H-Huh?" she asked amber eyes gazing around wildly.
Jade looked relieved, "Thank God," she whispered. She gulped her grip loosening, "Thought you'd gone all comatose on me," she said grinning.
Emerald frowned. She took Jade's hand gently, "I-I'm sorry wolfie," she whispered. She rubbed her knuckles, "I was just zoning out," she said.
"Can I ask why?"
Emerald's fur bristled, "N-Nope!" she laughed weakly. She ran a thumb over Jade's claws lightly.
Jade jerked her hand back, "D-Don't!" she balled her hands into fists hiding her claws against her palm.
Emerald flinched, "Wh-Why?" she asked.
"I-I don't wanna hurt anyone," Jade grumbled. Her ears flattened.
Emerald took her hand again, "Wolfie..." she whispered.
Jade continued speaking, "I-I usually trim them, I-I just haven't yet,"
Emerald frowned, the sight of the panicked wolf was heartbreaking, "Wolfie," she repeated. She pressed a finger to her lips. She took her hands again. She smoothed her fingers over the claws again, "Wh-Why cut them?" she asked wanting to know the wolf better, to try to understand.
Jade sighed, "'Cause I scare people,"
"You don't scare me," Emerald countered.
Jade chuckled hollowly, "I didn't say you specifically bunny," she sighed. "I said people," she spread her hands over an unseen surface as if to encompass these unseen people, "I don't want to hurt anyone," her head lowered ears flat against her fiery blue and garnet hair, "According to everyone else," another swipe of the hands, "I am just... a wolf. Big and bad," she laughed bitterly.
"I--"
Jade cut her off, "All my life, I've had to hide some of my quirks, my anger, my claws," she huffed. "I've always been the gothic bitchy carnivore," she growled grip tightening on the rabbit girl's hands, "sure, I don't have meat-eating instincts like I would have were I around almost a century ago, and the soy replacements work fine when the rare urge strikes," she said "but I'm still feared, still avoided." she sighed, "For example. I was walking to the store last week. I was just walking humming to some band I don't remember," she shrugged, "I ran into a red deer, some random guy lookin' at his phone as he walked, we bumped into each other. I tried to apologize. Before I could he shrunk back and ran to the other side of the street, to him I was just another wolf, another carnivore,"
Emerald pouted. She wanted two things. One, to punch that deer in the nose, and two, to just hug the wolf. To take her from such a hateful place, "I-I wouldn't know..." she sighed, "not from experience anyway," she added.
Jade felt irrationally angry, "N-No you wo-wouldn't!--"
Emerald pressed a finger to her lips, "I wouldn't know," she repeated, "but I WANT to," she said. She frowned, "I know I've definitely been a part of such a cycle," she sighed "and I'm sorry..." she whispered. Her hands trail down to her hands, "but I WANT to know," she repeated. She took a deep breath. She lifted her pinkie and pressed the tip of it into her claw letting a drop of blood pool to the surface.
Jade froze, "E-Em!--"
Emerald shushed her, she licked her pinkie clean the skin quick to clot, "So tell me," she pleaded. She squeezed her hands, "so tell me," she begged, "don't hide, not with me," she added. She brushed forward. She gulped. Maybe she could make Jade see if she was more intimate, more physical, "you don't have to hide with me wolfie, I want you for you," she rubbed her knuckles.
Jade gulped. Her tail wagged sweeping across the sidewalk, "E-Em?" she saw her brushing forward. Her body moved on its own.
Emerald paused amber eyes sparkling like dim embers in the dim street, "Ye-Yeah?" she asked. She stood on her toes to meet her eyes. Violet with a sort of sadness deep down.
"Wh-What are we doing?" she asked breath slowing eyes half-lidded growing darker.
"Dunno, what do you want to do wolfie?" Emerald's nose twitched. Jade's scent filled her entire being. She smelt like a forest, the end of a rainstorm, and burnt firewood. She loved it. Her cotton ball tail began to wag in an excited blur.
Jade gulped. Emerald's scent filled her nose as well. She smelt like lavender, roses, and fresh cookies from the oven. She absolutely loved it, "Dunno," she chuckled. She pressed closer.
Emerald tilted her head eyes closed. Jade did the same. Jade let her eyes peek open to glance at the rabbit girl. She felt a cold hand gripping her chest as several people, both carnivores and herbivores alike glared at the two as they passed. She gazed at the rabbit who was leaning forward reaching for her eyes closed lips parted lightly. She shrunk back. She cupped her cheek smoothing her strawberry pink fur delicately, "A-Anyway," she coughed.
Emerald melted into her hand. She waited for a beat of silence. She couldn't help but pout lightly. Her eyes flutter open, "M-Mm?" she hummed. Her eyes met hers again.
"Let's get you those sweets huh?" she stood offering a hand for the rabbit.
Emerald blinked. She frowned. She shook her head. She'd take a chance another time when they were more alone. Maybe when they were in the shop. She giggled, "Mm, that sounds great," she took her hands dragging herself up. Her eyes lit up and she bounced excitedly, "I'm going to gorge myself on so many cookies!" she cheered. She rushed off down the sidewalk.
Jade flinched, "He-Hey!" she laughed, "wait up!" she called. She rushed off darting and weaving past people lightly with occasional apologies.
Emerald squealed and laughed, "Oh no, the big bad wolf is chasing me!" she mocked. She skid to a halt outside of a small shop panting and laughing. She looked up at the bright blue letters on the door fondly. In cursive "The Bake Zone" was etched into the glass. The interior was small and homey, with cobalt walls and hanging lamps, light tan floors, plush leather couches and tables, and a large glass display for their baked good.
Jade slid to a halt behind her panting and smiling. She hugged her to her chest, "Finally caught ya~" Jade quipped.
Emerald giggled, "You got me," she quipped in return.
Slowly, an officer approached. A female tiger in a blue uniform ears poked through her cap. Her hand rested on her belt claws flexing ready to act, "What's going on here?" she snapped gruffly.
Jade let go of the rabbit woman, "I-I--" she froze. She shrunk back. Tears filled her eyes ears flicked back. Shit, she'd lost control again. She couldn't help it. With Emerald it felt so easy, so freeing.
Emerald strode forward hurriedly, "Hey!" she stood between the two arms spread.
The officer blinked, "Hm?" she knelt down, "is this wolf bothering--"
"No!" Emerald spat, "we were having fun, a race, I'm fine... leave. her. alone!" she spat.
The officer glanced with cold hardened eyes, "Yeah? who is she to ya?"
"My friend, we aren't breaking any laws, now..." she stood on her toes "move along!" she spat, "if I need your help, I'll fuckin' ask for it," she huffed, "c'mon wolfie, cookies await!" she cheered.
Jade was gobsmacked. Had this previously sweet soft-spoken rabbit girl just mouthed off to a cop? she gulped, "E-Er ri-right," she stammered. She bowed her head, "officer," she said respectfully following as Emerald dragged her into the bakery.
In a huff, the officer walked off. The girl behind the counter looked at the two concerned not really batting an eye at Jade's presence, "My God are ya'll alright?" she asked. A short squirrel girl with chestnut hair and blonde hair with thick gold-rimmed glasses and gray eyes in a pink tank top and white shorts with pink oven mitts on her hands, her voice light and bouncy with a slight Southern accent.
Emerald carefully led Jade to the counter, "Yeah, just assholes being assholes," she said.
The squirrel rolled her eyes "What else is new, who's your friend hon?" she asked.
Jade burst out laughing holding her stomach, "My God bunny!" she gasped, "that was amazing!" she cheered.
Emerald blushed, "Y-Yeah?"
"Yes!" Jade snorted "you mouthed off to a fuckin' cop!" she laughed.
The squirrel chuckled, "Yep, our bunny here is usually meek but light enough sparks around her, she'll go off," she smiled.
Emerald nodded, "Anyway," she chuckled, "Sadie this is Jade, Jade this is Sadie,"
"Charmed," Sadie waved "She and her please sugar," she added.
"We'd like some things," Emerald said.
Sadie threw on a tacky fake Italian accent, "I gots the goods if you gots the money," she rested her elbows on the counter.
"I gots the money," Emerald replied sliding her wallet to the counter. She ordered two large bags of cookies with a healthy mix of snickerdoodles, chocolate chip, coffee, lace cookies, sugar cookies, butter cookies, gingerbread, red velvet, macaroons, white chocolate macadamia nut, meringue, and pumpkin spice.
Jade ended up taking a lot of the red velvet, coffee, and lace cookies, "M-My favorites," she whispered.
Emerald nodded, "Noted,"
Sadie packed generous amounts of each in four bags. Two for each. When Jade opened her mouth to protest Sadie held up her hand, "Please take them," she said, "I'd just end up throwin' em' away at the end of the day," she shrugged.
"Yeah, mama Sadie has always been generous,"
"Mama?" Jade tilted her head.
"Well yeah," Sadie said. "My husband and I have kids,"
"How are the little angels?"
Sadie snorted, "Angels?" she laughed "you got the right kids in mind?" she chuckled. She shook her head, "they're great. They miss their Auntie Em,"
Emerald frowned, "Well, I'll have to babysit soon then," she giggled.
"That'd be nice," Sadie nodded "this weekend ok?"
"Emerald nodded, "Yep!" she chirped.
Jade giggled, "I bet they're such cute little squirrels," she mused.
Sadie blinked, "Squirrels?" she laughed, "oh no, they ain't squirrels, well, one of em is," she said. She smiled at Jade's inquiring eyes, "one is a squirrel, the other one is a panther," she clicked in the register. She gave a sly glance to Emerald.
Emerald blinked, "What?" she asked.
Sadie smiled "With number three on the way,"
Emerald squealed, "Ahaha!" she ran behind the counter hugging her tightly, "congrats Sadie, you and Bax have been trying for forever," she cheered. "Do you know the gender?"
Sadie stumbled catching her, "Nah, we just found out the other day, Baxter was so happy," she giggled.
Jade stood shocked yet in awe, a panther and a squirrel, married with kids. Was that even possible? she couldn't help but feel oddly hopeful at the thought, "C-Congrats," she said.
Sadie smiled. She gave a knowing look, "it ain't always easy, people stare, call my kids half-breeds, mutts, but I don't care, I'm happy. My family is what I care about, sometimes," she knelt down fixing her display, "the world will judge you, try to force ya to some mold, push you around, push it back," she said.
Emerald nodded, "Careful," she chastised. She helped Sadie up carefully. She walked toward the door holding their bags of cookies in her purse the tops poking out. She blinked noticing that Jade wasn't following her, "Wolfie?"
Jade gulped, You go on ahead, I'll catch up," she assured.
Emerald nodded, "Ok, don't make me wait too long wolfie," she teased. She strode forward waiting outside.
When the door shut Jade took a deep breath, "Th-Thank you," she whispered.
"For?" Sadie asked.
"The cookies for starters," she began. She gulped, "f-for everything," she added. She rested a paw on the counter to keep herself steady her world reeling, "for... g-giving me hope," she mumbled.
Sadie awwed softly, "Course sugar," she put a hand over hers not flinching at her claws, "The world is cruel, crass, and unkind it's true," she said "but that don't mean it ain't got it's good things too," she said with motherly tenderness.
Jade stole a glance out the window, "Ye-Yeah,"
"Just one thing," Sadie's grip tightened.
"Ye-Yes ma'am?"
Sadie gave a venomous smile, "Hurt her and you die," she said jokingly.
Jade shuddered, "R-Right," she bowed her head retreating to the streets. She saw the cop from earlier. She snarled as she stared and the cop hurriedly looked away.
Emerald approached, "Finally, kept me waitin' how dare you," she huffed, "keep this up and I'll have to dock your pay,"
Jade laughed, "Mm, I won't let it happen again boss lady," she cooed.
Emerald smirked, "Good girl," she patted her head. She handed her two of the bags, "your first pay for a job well done,"
Jade smirked, "Thanks boss," she said. She took a deep breath, "let me walk you home,"
Emerald smiled shyly, "O-Oh you don't have to do that w-wolfie," she stammered.
"I want to," Jade argued.
Emerald sighed, "ugh, fine, fine," she laughed.
Jade smiled. She held her hand protectively as they walked. Eventually, she arrived at an apartment complex, "This it boss lady?" she asked.
Emerald nodded, "Yep," she said. She smiled, "thank you wolfie," she pecked her claw with her lips delicately.
Jade's heart raced. If she were to die at this moment, she could do so happily, "C-Course," she stammered, "call me for another shift if you need it?" she asked.
Emerald nodded, "Mhm!" she turned and disappeared into the lobby.
Jade watched the rabbit walk until she disappeared behind the sliding door of an elevator cookie hung between her lips. Jade slowly walked home. She slipped into her apartment. She squealed into her hands her body burning up in a torturously lovely mix of hope, desire, and a hint of confusion. She nibbled one of the coffee cookies mind racing. Maybe there was hope. An hour later as she showered her mind still wandered constantly to Emerald and Sadie. 'Maybe there is hope' her mind repeated like a scratched record. She brushed out her fur and hair, ' I WANT to know, so tell me, don't hide, not with me,' Jade's mind echoed in Emerald's voice. That's what the rabbit had said, even as her claw pierced her pinkie, even as she bled from her claws. Jade packed her cookies in her fridge, 'maybe there's hope?' her mind repeated yet again. She slumped to her bed. The rabbit's scent was stuck in her nose, her smiling face stuck in her head. She drifted off growling lightly her tail wagging slowly. She smiled, as she fell deeper under sleep's spell, Jade couldn't help but dream of the kiss that almost was and all the ways it could have gone. The dream faded to possible futures. A married paradise with kids of their own, loving each other unabashed and unapologetic.
Across town. In her own apartment. In her own bed, Emerald slept dreaming of the same in the quiet night each color of her dream making her heart lighter. And finally, she pressed her lips to Jade's.
