"Where am I?" That was the first thought he had after waking up. He didn't know how he'd fallen asleep or anything else for that matter. He didn't even know his name. What was his name? He tried to remember it but it kept slipping out of his grasp.
The undeniable reality suddenly dawned on him. He knew nothing. His age, height, family, friends, where he was, how he got there or even where he came from. He knew nothing about himself. And it absolutely terrified him.
He thought for a minute. Maybe he did remember something. There. A memory. A name. He grasped for it in his mind and reached out his imaginary hands to grab it and see what it was. His fingers slipped around its shape, but he finally managed to grab onto it and he looked at it.
Kevin. His name. At last, he had something. He felt as though he should feel some level of satisfaction, but impossibly, he felt even emptier than before. Lost in a void without anything to hold on to, doomed to be forever falling into the abyss below. Or above. His mind was a blank paper and he was nothing but a name. Kevin.
He said it out loud. "Kevin." It didn't feel right in his mouth, leaving a sour taste on his tongue. "Kevin, Kevin, Kevin, Kevin." He said it over and over again until it felt comfortable, until the name was known to his own tongue. Until he believed it to be his own. Now he knew three things for certain. He had no idea where the hell he was, he knew nothing about anything and his name was Kevin.
