Okay this part is about in text author's notes, or notes you put into the thick of your story.
1st. You want to make sure that without the author's note a reader can still understand whats going on. For example in my Golden Blue story
ex. I did my best to block out the ravenous thoughts that came from her words mixed with the stirring of my demon jeans (just to be clear I meant his DNA not his pants if you know what I mean).
The in text Author's note I used was just a clarification, Readers could still understand what I meant, in context that is, without the need of the of the Author's note Try reading it without the clarification and it'll make enough sense.
2nd. Appropriate Authors notes. Short clarifications? Appropriate. Pronunciation help? Appropriate. Basically anything that isn't needed.
