*Erin above ⬆️ *
I lost them.
They're gone and there's nothing I can do.
Fighting the tears threatening to spill from my eyes. Looking at the graves of my mother and sister. I don't understand what I did to deserve the two most brightest people in my life to be taken from me. I quickly wipe the stray tears that betrayed my will and fell. The sound of my quiet sobbing echoing through the wind.
"Erin." My father's voice boomed across the once peaceful yard. Still stuck in my mourning I wasn't able to hear him. "Erin!" His voice boomed once again but the time held slight aggravation. "Huh..?" I turn to look at my father who was in the back door way with a solemn expression plastered on his face.
"We can no longer stay here. The government could track us any minute. We are leaving tonight."
"But dad we just can't leave them..!" I protested clinching my hand closed; trying to relieve some of the anger that has built up ever since mom and Kaden got sick.
"Erin, they're dead. There's nothing we can do"
"But-"
"Enough. Pack your things." He stated with finality heard in his voice. Giving me a 'don't argue with me' glare.
"How can you be so cruel! Your wife and daughter just died and all you do is look past it as if its nothing to you!" Raising my voice for the first at my dad. He obviously wasn't expecting me to raise my voice since I was the more obedient daughter out of me and Kaden. Dad continued stared at me shocked clearly written on his face. Deciding to ignore him I marched across the lawn back into the house. Storming in the direction of my room upstairs.
How dare he just overlook mom and Kadens death like trash! Does he even care?!? I burst through my bedroom door storming to my closet to get my backpack to store my things. Stomping back to my messy bed I start throwing clothes and supplies in my back.
Like what husband and father just looks over the death of such family members? I continue to stuff my most important supplies into my bag. Walking back to my closet to retrieve a coat and anything warm. Since the climate has been dropped non stop, it hasn't stopped snowing for the past 6 months. After I grab a few sweaters and joggers I walk back to my backpack that is on my bed. Pasting my nightstand that held a picture of me,mom Kaden and dad.
I stopped in my tracks, staring at the photo. We all looked so happy and care free. And most importantly, healthy. But those were old times; mom and Kaden are dead, dad is acting strange and me..well..I'm just me. I shake my head to rid myself of any depressing thoughts I continue to my backpack to stuff the clothes in it.
"Be ready at 7:00pm" my father's voice echoed through the staircase.
Blowing out a harsh breath I reach in my back pocket of my jeans to grab my phone. Pushing the power button to reveal the current time.
6:46pm. It's almost time. Pushing the phone back in my back pocket.Quickly rounding the rest of my belongings only bringing the the most useful things. I sit on my bed bending over to grab my ankle high black boots. Pulling them over my sock clad feet; pulling at the laces to tighten them to my liking. I tuck the excess laces into the leather of the boots so I don't trip if we end up having to run.
I pull my knitted sweater that my grandma hand knitted me a awhile back over my head tugging it down my boobs to my waist. After a few seconds of straightening to sweater I reach for my way too big coat. Pulling that over my petite frame. This coat use to be my dads but he soon bought another one giving the older one to me. Letting the coat swallow my whole, I zip the zipper up tugging the hood over my curls.
I walk up to my body mirror staring at the puff ball that stared back. I grab my phone once again checking the time. 6:55pm. Ok time to head out.
Grabbing my bag off the bed. Stopping at my night stand I reach for the picture frame that held on of my happiest memory. I bring two fingers to my lips pressing them softly against my lips before bring pressing them on the cold glass of the frame. "Bye mom. Bye Kady." I whisper. A single tear falling from my eye.
I set the picture down on the stand and walked out my door. I speed walk through the halls making it to the top of stairs I start to descend. I walk to the living room to find my dad stand king at the front door with his arms crossed and a blank stare looking at me.
He wore his coat with baggy khakis and winter boots. He also carried a backpack on his shoulder. "Took you longer enough," he huffed out. I scoffed while trudged towards him. "Well I'm here so let's go," I bit back. "Before we go, give me your phone."
"What? Why?" I question him.
"We are dealing with the government. They will use any source to track as many females as possible. So unless you wanna be found and taken I suggest you hand me the phone" he said with a serious expression. Holding his hand out in expectancy.
I huffed out a breath before reaching in my back pocket to retrieve my phone. Handing it to him he inspected it before dropping it to the ground and stomping on it. I flinch front the sudden movement. He stomped on my precious phone smashing it to bits a few more times before stopping completely and taking and breath.
Without a word he unlocked the door; opening it and stepped outside. He peaked his head through the door signaling to hurry and follow. I whimpered walking past the corpse of my phone that laid at the door way. I step through the door only to be met the bitterness of the freeze temperature.
It was definitely below 0 out here. Gosh, I just hope I don't freeze my freaking eyebrows off out here. The chilling breath of the wind hitting my face full force. Even with all these layers I'm shaking from the cold.
Trudging through the 10inch snow to where my father waited outside and the beginning of the woods. We couldn't take the car since someone siphoned our gas a few days prior. Which was a mystery since our house is literally a cabin in the middle of the woods. But it is what it is
After catching up with him we begin our journey into the forest to heavens know where. We don't have a direct location but somewhere south from where we are now. We may even end up leaving North Dakota.
The new virus has been ruthless this past year taking the lives of so many people. So much chaos. Hopefully our journey will go smoothly with out trouble.
Hopefully.
