"Are you sure you're ok with him?" You asked, fidgeting with the hem of your dress as your eyes darted over and over to where Theo was playing with Anthony.
"I'm trying not to be insulted," Seb said with a frown, crossing his arms over his chest. "I'm his favourite godfather. We will be fine for a few hours."
"I heard that!" Anthony called out, though he didn't look up as he made two trains crash together, with sound effects and all.
"I wasn't trying to hide it," Seb said cockily, shooting you a wink. "That kid loves me."
Anthony scrooped Theo up, coming to join you in the front hallway. "No way, he's gonna get a hang of saying mama any day now, then you know what's next? Ma – Ma – Mackie. I'm gonna be his first real word."
You let them bicker while you took one last look around the kitchen. There were clean bottles, enough jars of baby food to feed a small village, the dogs had food and water... but you decided maybe you should tell Ro just to come over instead. Glancing at the monitor again, you felt the tug to stay growing stronger. He was too little to leave on his own. It was selfish. Leaving the house for a dinner when he could need you for something felt all kinds of wrong and –
"Hey," Seb said, his hands resting on your upper arms, squeezing gently to get your attention. "You deserve a night out with Ro. A baby free night. It does not make you selfish. Go. We've got everything under control. The emergency numbers are on the fridge. His favourite food is sweet potato, and if he pitches a fit, we'll just give him a bottle. He gets a psychotic Chris style sink shower unlike a normal bath because my best friend is a crazy person. Dodger won't go for a walk unless he knows someone is standing guard with Theo. Zeppelin needs at least two blankets on his dog bed or he won't settle. We know the drill. You can breathe."
You nodded your head like you were a bobblehead. "Ok. Yeah... ok. Yeah. I can do this. I'm going to go out. To dinner with Ro. Without Theo. And it will be fine."
"It will be fine," Seb repeated, Anthony nodding behind him.
Before you had a chance to second guess yourself you gave them each a quick hug, thanking them for taking care of Theo so you could have a night out with your best friend. Today was your anniversary and Chris was still on a press tour for the latest film he'd directed, so Ro was flying into town and meeting you for dinner to celebrate until Chris was back.
Shrugging on your coat and grabbing your purse, you took one final look back at Seb and Anthony, who were smiling encouragingly at you. You planted a wet kiss right on Theo's cheek, his smile the last thing you saw as you shut the door, heading down the steps before you could change your mind. Carson was out front, standing by the back door of the car so he could drive you downtown.
"I'm not getting in the back you dolt," you muttered, rolling your eyes as you stepped around him to get in the front seat.
Carson grunted in annoyed acknowledgement, striding to the driver's door and climbing in. "Forgive me for trying to maintain a semblance of propriety."
He put the car in drive, pulling out from the front of the house, heading down the long winding driveway. You snorted a laugh at him. "Propriety? One of the first times we hung out, we drank beers and watched a marathon of Die Hard movies."
A low chuckle slid past his lips, Carson shaking his head at you indulgently. "I thought I was going to lose my job that day."
It was dark out, the traffic nearly non-existent as Carson drove you towards Ro's hotel in downtown Boston. She'd only landed a couple hours ago, opting to stay at a hotel since her old room was now a nursery. It had you considering that maybe, the house wasn't quite big enough anymore.
