That evening
The wine glass you'd poured for yourself was full to the brim. Chris was going on Jimmy Fallon tonight. Well, technically he'd already filmed it earlier this afternoon, but it was airing shortly. You knew he'd knock it out of the park- he always did. But it never stopped his nerves from taking over, just like always.
You and Chris had been friends for a couple years now, since you'd moved to Boston for work and bumped into him at a park while he was walking Dodger. You'd bonded over your love for the city you were discovering for the first time and became fast friends. He travelled a lot for work, and right now he was going between New York and LA doing press tours for his latest movie release- an indie film you'd pushed him to take to help him prove he was more than just Captain America.
It had become your tradition - you'd text him to wish him good luck before the interview, and he'd call you before he went to bed – and after you'd watched it – to go over how it went and to let him stress about everything he wished he'd said differently while you did your best to convince him he'd done a great job.
After almost every one of these calls, he'd tell you how much he appreciated your friendship, and how he didn't know what he'd do without your support. You were so happy to be that person for him, even if your feelings for Chris were... complicated.
Taking a healthy drink from your wine glass, you sat down on your couch, throwing a blanket over your legs. Dodger was already curled up on the couch, his head resting on his paws as he snored gently. Getting to take care of Dodger while Chris was out of town was always a treat, and a good excuse to get out for long walks even when the weather was cold enough to have you wanting to hibernate inside. Chris was only midway through this press tour, having at least another two weeks on the road, which meant another two weeks of Dodger bonding time.
Picking up the remote, you unmuted the TV that was already tuned to Jimmy's show. He was doing one of his segments, writing comedic letters while the studio audience laughed. You placed the remote beside you, leaning back on the couch to get comfortable. Dodger shifted so his head was on your lap and you ran your fingers along his head, scratching behind his ears the way he liked.
