The Interview, Take Two

Start from the beginning

And just like last time, you grabbed a glass of wine right before his interview was due to air and settled onto the couch to watch.

"Please welcome to the show, Chris Evans!" Jimmy Fallon practically shouted, the audience cheering forcefully.

Chris waved, his smile broad, the platinum band on his ring finger flashing in the studio lights. Your heart practically sprinted out of your throat. It didn't seem fair that he looked so damn good while being so far away. Every time you saw him, it hit you all over again, that fierce pride. And perhaps a little possessiveness too.

"Thanks for having me back on the show Jimmy. Honestly, I thought after last time I'd be banned," he said, laughing along with the audience. You couldn't help but chuckle too.

"Are you kidding me? You came to my show to promote your movie and ended up accidentally declaring your love for your now wife. Sure we couldn't air it, but it was kind of cool to be the first one to know. Even before she did!" The audience cheered, Chris looking down bashfully with a shrug.

"So Chris, how is married life treating you? And fatherhood! A lot of changes since you were last here."

"Yeah, things have definitely changed in the ... wow it's almost been two years hasn't it? Y'know, look, I couldn't ask for a better person to do life with. She's ... well she's everything. And watching her become a mom to our son? It's just been the greatest blessing of my life. She jokes she's surrounded by boys now, but it's fun. It's a noisy house and I love it."

If you'd thought your heart had bolted earlier, it was nothing compared to now. You could barely swallow as your throat tightened. Don't cry, you pleaded with yourself, blinking rapidly.

"That's – I mean Chris, you're just beaming. It's so great to see. And Matthew, what a cutie!"

"We've been calling him Theo, but yeah, he certainly takes after his mother. He's a great kid. Just turned eight months, so he babbles all day long. He's got a lot to say apparently. He's been crawling but recently he's started trying to pull himself up. I'm not ready for him to take off running yet. It's terrifying! Suddenly our whole house is a hazard. But it's fun watching him learn the world."

"Any signs of the I don't wike it gene passing down to him?"

Chris laughed, his whole body rocking backwards as his hand clamped down over his heart. "It's too soon to tell but I have a feeling it'll be like father, like son."

"And how are Dodger and Zeppelin adjusting to life with Theo?"

You grinned at the question, stroking Zeppelin's head in your lap as you eyed the monitor.

"It all started when my wife was still pregnant – Dodger would curl up around her stomach protectively. Now he always naps with the baby, and you'll rarely see one without the other. I think you have a photo." Chris pointed to the screen as Jimmy nodded fervently, both of them turning to face behind them.

On the screen, a photo appeared of baby Theo in his crib, Dodger wrapped protectively around him. The audience cooed, Chris' smile beaming proudly at his boys. It was your same view now through the monitor, Dodger dutifully on guard.

"I mean, how perfect are they?" Chris asked, the audience cheering again.

"Any chance for another baby?" Jimmy asked, pitching his voice to whisper loudly, as though they were conspiring together. Oh boy. What a loaded question.

Chris laughed, the twinkle in his eye unmistakable. "Come on Jimmy, I have to keep some secrets."

Jimmy chuckled, clapping his hands together. "Alright alright, I'll let it go this time. So, you're here to talk about your transition away from acting completely and into directing. But can we talk about the rumours you might be leaving Hollywood entirely and going into politics?"
