this book is about valonnikah and jai who grew up together as community kids. they had parents but they were never around as they had to work three jobs in order to keep the whole block in order. they would always sleep at another persons house until their parents would come home.
the block are not blood related but treated one another as family.
jai is gay and is accepted by their block but not by the students at his school in east freeleadge. only accepted by valonnikah, her friends and one guy and his group. he is a light skin Puerto rican. fooling many students into thinking he's white but the others thinking he's white washed.
valonnikah is the only Nigerian in their school, many students hate her cause of her skin colour but the others either didn't know who she was or she was friends with them. the whole school knew who she was. but when the students who hate her get the best of her, she forgets what she was there for and takes all her anger out on herself.
