-The incantation "reducto" is derived from Latin reduco, meaning "reduce" or "bring down".

-The incantation Sectumsempra derives from the two Latin words: sectum, a participle of the verb sĕco , "to cut", and semper, meaning "always" or "ever". Since English has many words meaning "cut" or "lacerate", and since spell-names lend themselves to both infinitive and gerund verb forms ("to cut" and "cutting"), Sectumsempra can be translated in more than one way: "cut always", "ever cutting", "always sever", "ever severing", and so forth.

-Oppugno is Latin, meaning "I assault".

-Imperio takes its name from the Latin imperiosus, meaning "commanding, mighty, and powerful", imperium, which means "power" or "authority", or impero, which means "to rule".

-Crucio means 'I torture'. Cruciatus takes its name from the Latin word for 'pain' or 'torture', the root of which can be seen in other words such as 'excruciating' and 'crucifixion'.

-Avada Kedavra is based on the Aramaic אַבַדָא כְּדַברָא, avada kedavra, meaning "let the thing be destroyed". "Kedavra" also sounds very similar to the English word cadaver, which means "corpse", and derives from the Latin cadere, "to fall".
