"I found a case!" Jack said excitedly. "A hunter's case. You see?"
Jack turned the laptop screen to face you, and your eyes scanned the news article headline.
GRIZZLY BEAR ATTACKS!
You quirked a brow. "Seems like a normal animal attack, to me."
Jack continued without needing to see the article, as though he already memorized the details. "There's more. Not only was there this attack, but three hikers went missing just one week later. It can't be a coincidence."
"Sam and Dean have enough to worry about right now." You gently brushed it off, turning the laptop back around. "They don't need to follow up on another potential hunch of a case."
"We don't have to involve them. We can do it on our own."
A hesitant sigh escaped your lips. You looked upon his child-like face, full of excitement and recklessness. You scanned the empty bunker, Sam and Dean currently absent and on a case of their own. "They'll kill us if they find out."
"They won't even know we left," Jack countered with a smile. "I have my powers back, remember? So I can teleport us. We'll be in and out before they come back." He noticed your reluctance. "Come on, {Y/n}. It'll be fun!"
"Okay," you said, your lips curling up as you finally gave in.
"Great." He beamed. "I already have our aliases."
Ten minutes later, suited up with a bag of gear in hand, you and him teleported unnoticed to the outskirts of the small town.
You two quickly found the local sheriff, and Jack greeted her. "I'm Agent Plant, and this is Agent Page." He nodded to you before continuing. "We're here to investigate the disappearance of the three hikers. They've been missing for 36 hours now, is that correct?"
She nodded, giving a quick explanation of their last known whereabouts, before furrowing her brows. "This is an FBI matter?"
"Quite possibly," you stated. "In any case, we prefer to be thorough and eliminate all possible causes."
"Well, I'm afraid that's all I know," the sheriff said, turning to leave. "I wish you luck on this."
You thanked her, and you and Jack left, heading to the hiking trail.
Soon enough, trees engulfed you in every direction. The trodden path became hard to spot and eventually disappeared in the overgrown grass.
You turned to Jack. "I haven't seen any sign of the hikers. Have you?"
He shook his head. "No." Jack thought for a moment. "Maybe we should split up. That way we can cover more ground."
"Splitting up is never a good idea," you said, immediately reminded of every horror movie, "but... it would help." You pointed a distance into the trees. "I'll go this way. After 20 minutes, let's meet at the edge of the forest--where we came in from."
"Got it." He nodded once, taking off in a different direction.
"Don't die!" you jokingly shouted to him. "You're my ride home."
He faced you, walking backwards, a kind smile on his face. "I'll be careful," he shouted back.
And suddenly, you were alone.
