"You're back." Joanne said.
"Yeah I got my nails done. See," Patricia showed Joanne her colored nails. The middle fingers of both hands had pink zebra stripes but the other fingers were plain poid pink.
"It's pretty. I've never seen you get your nails done. What's the occasion?" Joanne said. She was joking but Patricia gave her a serious reply.
"Jim's party. He's hosting it at his house and I've gotta be there."
"Too bad."
"What?"
"I can't go to the party."
"What - why?"
"Pat you know I don't do parties."
"Even for me?" Patricia pouted. She had her puppy eyes activated but they were no match for Joanne's stubbornness.
"Even for you. Sorry." Joanne crossed her legs as if saying 'I'm not leaving here'. She cocked her head. "What's that?"
Patricia took the items in the black bag out. "I bought some things at the mall. New clothes for the party. Some make-up. Shoes. And a purse."
Joanne nodded. She went back to reading the book flipped over her bedstand. She didn't keep track of the name or author, she just kept reading. It was something about lycans and werewolves, a fantasy novel. The main character's name was Constance, an idiot that kept falling face flat on the floor and refusing free ice cream samples from handsome strangers. What a weirdo. Just like that hours passed by. Patricia was getting ready for the party. She wore a short sunset-red sleeveless gown, black heels and a black purse.
"How do I look?" Patricia spun in front of the mirror.
"Stunning." Joanne clapped. "Go like that to the party and Jim's not gonna be the only guy hooked on you."
"Stop." Patricia blushed.
"Stop what?" Joanne was being serious. Patricia looked really good. She smelt nice too.
"Alright I'm leaving. You sure you don't wanna come?" Patricia fixed her earrings in the mirror.
"Yep I'm sure." Joanne closed the book. She was done with the whole thing. It was seven hundred and sixty two pages.
"Kay. See you later." Patricia shut the door of the room.
Joanne smiled. She had the entire place all to herself. Not that Patricia was causing inconvenience or anything. She just liked having her own space. The showers were running. The speakers were on. Music was playing. Joanne was singing in the shower.
After minutes Joanne settled down next to her table. She tried to study for the test they had in two day's time - calculus. But nothing was sticking to her brain. She found it hard to comprehend the contents of the textbook.
Eight pm. Ten pm. Eleven pm. And Patricia still wasn't back. Alright that's it, Joanne stood up. The last time Patricia stayed out that late she came back a disaster. To avoid that she would go to the party and find Patricia herself.
Besides the calculus wasn't exactly appealing at the moment. She sure as hell didn't want to spend another three hours studying alphabets and numbers. She would go to the party. Spend about an hour. Clear her head. Come back with Pat. And by then she would be ready to study. Perfect.
What am I doing? What am I doing? Joanne walked into the veranda of Jim's house. She was wearing a pair of dark blue jeans and a black tank top. Nothing too fancy. For a change of pace she wore sneakers. Her peach air forces. She pressed the doorbell. The door wasn't opened by anyone so she pushed it. It wasn't even locked.
