Camilo flopped down on his bed after a long day of shapeshifting and making people laugh.
He looked at himself in the mirror across from his bed.
He let the smile he had plastered on his face from the family dinner he had come from drop. He watched himself in the mirror.
He barely recognized himself. He let out a long sigh and let his head fall into his hands.
After a minute, his shoulders shook and tears fell from his eyes. He watched himself in the mirror through blurry, tear filled eyes.
He heard a knock at his door and quickly wiped the tears from his eyes. He switched his face a few times to make the puffiness go away.
"Camilo?"
Mirabel's voice echoed through his large room and bounced off the walls. Camilo stayed silent hoping Mirabel would just assume he wasn't there.
"Camilo," Mirabel jokingly whined, "don't ignore me." Mirabel walked over to his bed in the middle of the large room. He sat with his back facing her.
"Hey, Camilito, are you okay? You had a weird energy about you at dinner and Dolores said she heard you sniffling."
Camilo put on a smile and turned to her, leaning back on his palms.
"Yeah, why wouldn't I be?"
Mirabel stared at him for a moment, a moment too long. Camilo felt the need to shift his face and make her smile.
He changed it to their Tío Bruno and recalled the story of Bruno and Mirabel's first encounter after discovering him in the walls.
"...Bye..." Camilo remarked in a Tío Bruno mannerism. Mirabel's expression didn't change.
Considering she had no real magic power like the rest of them, she was rather good at reading people.
"Camilo, be serious. What's wrong? I got Luisa y Isabel to admit to their internal struggles, granted that was for the sake of saving Casita, pero I never got to check in with you. Is there anything you want to get off your chest?"
Camilo thinks back to the countless nights of entertaining the family and then coming into his room to cry about countless things, most of which concerning whether he had an actual personality aside from copying other people's quirks to perform as a joke.
He felt like a fraud constantly and that he wasn't good enough as his own person solely because he didn't know who he was as his own person.
He didn't know what his favorite color was, he didn't know what he liked, he didn't know who he was.
Mirabel watched his brow furrowed with quiet consideration as he debated whether to admit his truth. Mirabel picked up on his uncomfort in opening up so she took the reins.
"Listen, if I tell you a secret will you admit yours? That way you don't feel alone?"
Camilo sighed.
"Yeah, yeah I guess that sounds alright."
"Alright," Mirabel took a deep breath and hesitated for a moment, "I am bisexual."
Camilo blinked at her.
"Well obviously," Camilo rolled his eyes.
"I'm sorry, what?"
"I said 'well obviously'."
"I- uh, I just missed the part where it was obvious I guess."
"Look at you, it's obvious." Camilo rolled his eyes, thankful for the distraction from his issue and
the chance to tease Mirabel. He even let out a smile. She was the cousin closest to him in age, even though he was only a month older.
He never let her live that down. They grew up almost as twins.
"You're so annoying." Mirabel laughed and jokingly shoved him. He started to fight back until she pulled him into a tight hug. He was caught off guard at first but sank into the hug.
She whispered into his ear.
"I know it's hard to accept it but you do not have to be okay all the time. You're allowed to feel upset. And you don't have to feel obligated to tell me what's wrong if you're not comfortable with it. I just want to see you happy. Truly happy."
Camilo broke down in tears and held Mirabel tighter.
Mirabel stroked his hair as he cried his deep secrets to her. He told her all about his imposter syndrome and even mentioned his stressing about
being gender fluid all the while she held his hand and listened, something people quite forget to do
often when they're too busy assuming anything that comes out of his mouth is a joke.
Camilo choked out his last sob and took a deep breath.
"At least I didn't sing about the pressure I'm under or how I can grow cactuses now."
Mirabel let out a snort and started laughing loudly.
"You caught me off guard with that one." Camilo smiled and pulled Mirabel into a hug again.
He whispered a small "thank you" before he released her and shoved her in the direction of the door.
"Now leave me alone before Dolores tells the whole famila I've been crying.
You know she can't keep a secret for the life of her." Mirabel laughed and opened the door to find Dolores on the other side of the house, eyes wide, obvious she was listening.
The door crowded with cousins and
siblings listening from the other side.
"Mira, it might be too late for that", Mirabel called to Camilo.
Camilo let out a groan and flopped
back on his bed.
