"LOOK OUT!"

The two children screamed as they barely avoided a tree that had toppled over. "Come on!" The (hair color) haired girl ushered as she grabbed the hand of her male friend and sprinted for their lives. The sky that was once filled with bright, shining stars was now clouded with ominous smoke coming from their burning village. The screams, the bloodshed, the discarded corpses scattered everywhere they turned.

"SLAUGHTER THEM ALL! NO SURVIVORS!" Ordered a dark guild member who laughed maniacally. "We have to hide!" The boy fearfully told his friend. The girl did her best to think quickly as her (eye color) irises frantically scanned through the chaos. Thankfully, she found a hiding place big enough for the two of them. "In here!" She ushered as they both dived under a fallen stone wall and caught their breaths.

Cautiously, the girl kept watch to make sure that they weren't followed. Seeing that the coast was clear, she sighed in relief. "I think we're safe here for now." She assured, looking towards her friend. "Mom... *sniff* ...dad..." He whimpered in between his cries. "I'm sorry... but they're gone..." The girl said solemnly. "...I didn't even get to meet my baby sister..." He mumbled before he began to cry harder. The girl looked at him solemnly as she scooted next to him and leaned her head on his shoulder. "At least you still have me...and I still have you right...?" Her friend looked down at her with a small smile. "You're right..." He said, drying his tears.

"I think I heard something over here!" A gruff voice announced as heavy footsteps began to grow closer towards their little haven.

"They're going to find us!" The boy whispered as he began to panic. The brave girl thought quickly before coming up with a plan. "Listen, I have an idea. When he sees us, we run separate ways and no matter what. Don't look back and don't stop running." She instructed him. He looked at her as if she had lost her mind. "W-what...?!"

"If we split up, they might not be able to catch us both." She elaborated. The boy shook his head vigorously. "N-no! Please! I don't want to lose you too...!" He begged as more tears began to roll down his cheeks. "Don't worry. As long as we have these, we will be able to find each other again. Nothing can ever keep us apart." The girl said as he held up the half heart-shaped charm on her bracelet that read 'best'.

"Right..." He said, looking at the matching shape charm on his bracelet that read 'friends.'

They both held each other's hands. "Let's promise that afterward, we will find each other again." She said. The boy wiped away his tears and gave her a small smile. "Yeah...no matter how long it takes..." The two of them shared one last embrace, wishing they could stay in each other's arms forever. Unfortunately, their time was cut short once the stone wall that kept them hidden was suddenly ripped away.

"I FOUND A COUPLE OF BRATS!"

"RUN!"

With that being said, the two children sprinted off in opposite directions, living on the promise that one day they will meet again.
