Chapter 3

On Wednesday, we get another History assignment. We all have a consecutive eye-roll when he announces it. I know I did amazing on the individual project, so I assume that the essay we have to write as our beginning unit will be no problem.

I've always hated history. I understand it's probably important that we know what happened in the past, but it's 2048 now, surely we can leave some of that stuff out. I'm dreading the 2020 unit.

The bell rings.

Weight training comes.

Bell rings.

It becomes a pattern every day. Maybe hoping everything would be amazing this year isn't the case.

Though, on Thursday, they announced that the fall sport pep rally would be tomorrow during the first period. I thought about that for a moment. Swimming wasn't until later in winter so thankfully I wouldn't have to go flaunt myself in front of the entire gym of sweaty high schoolers until nearing the end of the semester. I should ask Kian or Kennedy for one of the professional swimsuits with the shorts built in.

Nobody I knew, which was Evan and Piper, were important enough to go to the pep rally for. I might just skip it.

But something told me I shouldn't.

I guess I could just enjoy my time.

Friday comes quickly. Thursday felt like an hour.

I got to school early because Wine woke me up with his meowing. Everyone is talking excitedly. It's just a pep rally to me. Most people get hype when they happen even though our school has a sucky athletics program. The only achieving teams are the swim team, marching band, and occasionally the soccer team.

I sit and wait for Piper in the first period. I take out my phone and text Evan. I'm seriously contemplating the pep rally, but i'm already here so...

Piper slides in her seat beside mine.

"Do you know what fall sports we have?" I ask without looking up.

"Uh... Cross country, football, they might announce the marching band. That's all I can think of." Piper lists off a few.

I hum and start playing a game again. Piper settles down with one of her crime books. I swear she's obsessed with anything crime related. She probably wants to be a detective. I honestly wouldn't be surprised.

The intercom beeps loudly. Everyone in the class grimaces at the voice that echoes over.

All students to gym 2 for the pep rally. I repeat, all students to gym 2.

All of us start shuffling to gym 2. The school, in total, had three gyms. One was technically the pool, but I counted it as a gym. The good thing about the pool is that it's open after hours so if I ever wanted to use it at night then it was easily accessible. Why it was still open? I don't know! Terrible idea in my opinion, but only swimmers on the team who also had their own key card could get in the gate anyways.

Piper grabs my hand as 500 students try to fit through the doors at the same time. We eventually found a spot on the bleachers next to Evan who waved us over when we got in. Evan was crammed into the side while I was shoved next to him with Piper on my right.

I could feel Evan's knee bounce gently against mine.

Principal Watson starts talking about some random stuff and then the football cheerleaders start doing their routine. I don't really care so I look around the gym.
