Chapter 1

Blaring, beeping alarm clocks. I set multiple of them every night. It's quite easy for me to sleep longer than I'm supposed to. By the time I'm actually awake, at least 5 or 6 of the 10 alarms are going off simultaneously. Before I started setting a ton of alarms, I didn't even know that was possible.

I groaned, rubbing my eyes as I sat up. The door cracked open a bit and soon after, Wine hopped onto my blankets. He meowed in greeting, arching his back as I ran my hand along him once. Twice. Three times. He purred in satisfaction.

I got Wine from an animal shelter in my hometown, Rock Hill. I was only 4 or 5, but I loved him and took him with me when my family moved. He was the last of his litter, the runt with health complications my parents hadn't told me about until I moved in with my brother, Kian, in Desberg. We both take good care of him, though, he's given us quite a few scares with his asthma. The cream and orange ragdoll has been in our family since he was tiny, and when I lose him, it's going to be pretty hard to get over.

I don't remember much of Rock Hill. Like I said, I was only 4 or 5 when we moved. I don't even think I had any friends I was going to miss. I like it that way, though, less friends means less opportunities to get taken advantage of.

The town my parents live in currently I can't even remember the name of. I don't want to, either. They don't matter to me much anymore after they tried to get rid of Wine for his expensive asthma.

Kian has a girlfriend, Kennedy. If you ask me, their names couldn't be any better matched. Kian and Kennedy still get annoyed with me for making comments about it, but I don't really care. Kennedy is a blessing, though. Her job as a pediatric doctor helps pay for Wine's medical bills while Kian handles the apartment rent with his job as an executive secretary for a wifi provider.

Kian is one of those family guys. He always liked the idea of having someone to love forever so I can definitely see him and Kennedy going far.

Wine mews and drags me from my thoughts. I took a glance at the time.

6:40

Light was already flowing through the window. I turned off the alarms and disabled the ones soon to go. School started at 8:00 and it took about 10 minutes to bike there. I was ahead of schedule for my first day of Senior year.

I glanced at the notifications I received while I was sleeping while turning off the Do Not Disturb.

One new message from: Kian Aldine - 5:32 am

Three new messages from: Piper Stanton - yesterday 11:26 pm

Snap Message! Evan<3 - 6:32 am

I smiled and clicked on Evan's snap first. His goofy face illuminated my screen with the caption "already ready for Senior Year!"

I laughed and responded with my bed-headed appearance: "Just woke up, can't wait"

Evan Stanton, my best friend since I moved to Desberg to start highschool 4 years ago. I swear that we get even closer every single day. He was the first person I met after I spilled my coffee all over his shiny new jacket he got for the new school year. Ever since then, we've gone from awkward freshmen to... still pretty awkward seniors. At least, I haven't changed much.

Evan was one of the boys everybody wanted. He tried to act natural about it, but I could tell having such a glow up boosted his ego. It didn't change anything between us, though. I don't mind that he flirts with other girls in front of me. We aren't dating and don't intend to. Strictly friends.

I open Kian's message next.

Left your lunch in the fridge, have a good first last day of high school <3
