I remember the night we first met, or at least, when I first saw them. It was Junior prom and Jason had asked me to go with him, but he left me all alone on that dance floor. As I was standing there by myself, we locked eyes, those two eyes that I would stick by my whole Senior year.
It was just a quick glance, but I knew that I would never be the same. Up until that point, I had tried to deny my attraction to anyone who wasn't a boy, yet at that second the falsehood I had created completely crumpled. As I later found out, they had looked right past me- had never even seen me, yet I felt as though they saw me completely. I wanted to walk up to them, to try and start a conversation, but they quickly disappeared. I didn't see them again until August of our Senior year.
I walked into my first period of the day, Phys Ed, as we called it, and I saw them standing there. I was staggered, for they had been the only thing on my mind all summer. I, once again, wanted to talk to them, but just then the bell rang, and the P.E. teacher, Mrs.Schuweiler, told us to put on our gym clothes. It wasn't until I had those shorts on that they truly looked, or rather stared, at me. I hadn't noticed until I tried to sneak a glance at them, and they quickly turned away, blushing, with guilt apparent on their face.
"Alright everyone," Says Mrs.Schuweiler once we were all changed, "I need you all to pick a partner for today and introduce yourselves because they will be your partner for the rest of the year."
I thought it was odd that we were to have partners in gym class, but after thinking about it for a while it kind of made sense. I knew that I needed them to be my partner, i would forever hate myself if they weren't, so I quickly ran up to them before anyone else could and I said,
"Hi! Uhm, do you want to be my partner?"
For a second they look bewildered, as if I was a wild animal, but they soon put their hand out for me to shake, which I do.
"Sure." They say, "I'm Devon"
Devon. Devon, Devon, Devon, Devon. The name to forever be on my mind.
"That's so cute! I'm Lorelai, but you can call me Lailo."
Phys. Ed. went on as normal, if you ignore our daring glances. The rest of the day was relatively boring compared to my first period, that was until my last period, AP chem.
"It seems we were meant for eachother." says a voice behind me.
I whip around only to be met with those dazzling blue eyes.
Devon.
"A perfect match." I say. They laugh, and it is light and hearty and gorgeous.
We walk inside together and take a seat at a lab table together, with this unspoken agreement to be each other's partners in this class as well. As the teacher, Mr.Green, drones on about syllabuses and tests and such, I decide to really look at Devon. They have eyes the color of rocky shores, blue with a bit of brown mixed in, a small button nose compared to my large one, and lips just a little bigger than mine. Their hair is honey brown, cut above their ear with some light bangs and it seems to be ruffled perfectly. One day I'll run my hair through it. I promise myself.
"So, uh..." Says Devon, and I realize I've been staring.
"Yes?"
"Did you hear anything he said?"
"What? Oh, no, I didn't. Sorry."
"That's okay, I didn't think you had," They wink at me, "I wrote it down for you."
"Oh, thanks!"
"It's no problem. I also wanted to know if..." They trail off.
Know what? What is it?
"What's up?"
"Well can I come over to your house after school? There's this movie I really want to watch but none of my friends want to watch it with me."
Oh. My. God.
"Yeah! I would love that! I can drive us to my house after class and we can also order a pizza, if you want."
"Don't you want to know which movie?"
"I love movies, I'll watch anything."
