Friday November 26th 2040 was when the nationwide power cut occurred and it was probably one of the nights I was never going to forget.

It started like any other normal Friday would. I wake up, get ready, go to school, see my friends that sort of thing. But at 2:22pm was when things started to go downhill. I was in English at the time, we were writing an essay. The second one in two weeks. I was finishing a paragraph when the lights flickered. Everyone looks up. "It's okay everyone!" said Mrs Murray. "It's nothing major. Heads down and keep writing! We have eighteen minutes left." Thank god, I think. I hated English. I couldn't drop it because I was thirteen, the soonest that I could drop it would be in two years' time. I look out the window to see if it was windy, which would've made sense since the lights were flickering. It was already getting dark but there was no wind, weird. I look back down at my jotter. I was nowhere near done! Today was the last day we would be getting to write out essay's so how would I finish in time? Lee and Henry started talking beside me, there was almost no time when they weren't! They started talking about football and video games that no one plays anymore and lots of other random things that didn't make sense. "Lee! Henry!" They look up at Mrs Murray's furious face. "Would you care to share with the class what it is that you are talking about that is so much more important than your essay?"

"No Miss." says Lee.

"Okay then. Now get back to your work both of you! Because the next time I hear a peep out of you that if not something reasonable you will be moved!" Lee and Henry nod their heads and get back to work. I try so hard not to smile but I quickly get distracted again. The lights started flickering again but this time for longer. Everyone starts murmuring about what if it's a storm? What if we get to go home early? "Quiet ev-" Mrs Murray soon gets cut off by the bell. But not the end of the day bell, the stay in place bell. The stay in place bell is for big important things that the whole school needs to know. It wasn't a practise because if it was we would have been told on Monday that there would be a practise at some point in the week. Mrs Murray goes back to her desk and check what the message is. Everyone starts to chat again as if they didn't hear the bell. I look over to Mrs Murray she looked scared. Obviously the message was bad. "Alright everyone quiet down I'm about to read out the message." Everyone immediately stopped talking. "Thank you. Now lets see. The weather station in Winterfeld have issued a red weather warning and everyone will be let out early. All of those who live over the bridge will be prioritised. Power is expected to go out quite early on so make the most of it while you can." A storm? In November? This is going to be a nightmare especially when the heating goes. Everyone starts talking again about what might happen during the storm and one girl starts to cry. "There's no need to worry it's not that bad. The storm should only last for a day or so-" Another email comes up on Mrs Murray's computer. She checks it and gasps. "What's wrong Mrs Murray?" asks one of the girls. "Another strain of the virus has been discovered and is infecting people faster than ever and it's effecting people in different ways. The scientist are extremely confused about it and it's approaching here fast." Everyone is shocked into silence, I can hear someone scream a couple classrooms down. The bell rings again. "Alright everyone gather up your things and make you way to th-" The lights go out. People scream. "It's ok everyone just calm down! It's just he power nothing major!"

"Nothing major? Nothing major! The power has just gone out, there is a storm and some of the doors here are powered by electricity! How the hell are we going to get out?" Someone shouts.

"Nobody panic we can call the fire brigade and they can come get us out." I start putting all my things in my bag when I hear a groaning noise coming from the hallway. Everyone looks at me because I am the closest to the door, I roll my eyes and I go up to the door and see what is in the hallway. I peek out the window and try to angle myself so I can see properly. A figure of a sort hobbles into view. Whatever it was it didn't look human. The thing was wearing rags of what might used to be clothes, it was extremely dirty and there was some liquid around its mouth. It looks like blood. I hear more footsteps but this time they sounded more normal. I turn to my left and see Mr Matheson walking down the hallway towards the thing and somehow hadn't noticed it yet. The creature noticed Mr Matheson, it snarled and started running towards him. Mr Matheson starts screaming and running, but he wasn't fast enough. The creature pounced on him like a cat to a mouse. It pinned him down and bit his neck. All I could hear was Mr Matheson's pained screams as a chunk of his neck get ripped from his body. I backup from the door and everyone is looking at me. "Well Violet? What was it?"
