The Second Chance

Prologue

Owen is standing in his kitchen, screaming baby in his arms. He is on the phone with his girlfriend. "She has a fever and she wont stop screaming" he says into the phone panicking. His girlfriend who is at work for the next 4 hours can hardly hear him over the harsh sounds the child is making. "take her to the hospital I can't miss work I am sorry" she says worry in her voice for the small child. "Okay but what about Ana" Owen asks her wondering what to do with the baby's twin who is healthy and peacefully taking a nap in the other room."Call my mom have her  come over. that way she can stay asleep and doesn't have to worry about Amy waking her up with all her crying, but I have to go Owen I am being yelled at, I will talk to you later. I love you" she says hanging up. Owen calls Jasmine his girlfriends mother."yes" she asks but soon hears the crying from the infant she is instantly alert. "What's wrong  I will be over in a second clearly you need help." she says hanging up leaving Owen confused still holding the phone up to his ear as Amy screams louder.Soon Jasmine walks into the house running to Owen who is now talking fast trying to explain the situation. He hears a cry from the other room and sighs knowing that the sounds of her sisters cry's have awaken Ana "I need you to watch Ana. Amy is sick and needs to be taken to the hospital her fever is way to high" Owen says running out of the house and placing his 1 year old into the car seat and hoping in himself pulling out of the drive way.the whole way to the hospital Owen is only half focused on the road as he attempts to quite the baby."shhh Princess daddy is taking you somewhere they can make you better" he says grabbing the baby's foot since it was the closest thing to him squeezing it.as he turns around he notices to late that there is a semi swerving towards him in his lane he tries to veer out of the way but his body is in shock paralyzing him. His  last thoughts are about it the ring in his pocket a ring he saved up for for months; a small 2 carrot diamond ring meant for the love of his life.Soon the semi crashes into the car smashing the front end instantly killing Owen who's chest has collapsed against the steering wheel. The force of the impact snaps  Amy's neck leaving her dead. The car sent into abrupt silence. The driver stops realizing what he has done and calls the police but  panics, leaving the horrific scene behind. The police arrive in a matter of minutes only to find the grisly sight of the car that has been completely distorted.

*later that night at Owens home*

after the police recover the ID of the almost unrecognizable body of Owen Thomas a 17 year old male who lives in a small house in the suburbs of New York They leave the scene and head to the boys house to tell the family about the accident and to figure out who the baby in the back was.They knock on the door and come face to face with a girl holding a small child and are stuck by dejavu at the sight of a girl almost identical to the one that was in the car "Do you live with a Mr Owen Thomas" they ask The girls face slowly turned to worry as she screams for her mother to come take the baby from her "Yes I do I am his girlfriend. Why?" she asks close to tears fearing the worst "there has been a accident We regret to inform you that Mr. Thomas was killed along with the child in the back seat. Am I correct in assuming she is yours?" one officer asks.The girl just nods unable to speak as she falls to the ground sobbing uncontrollably. The other officer bends down on one knee in front of the girl and places a hand on her shoulder "I am sorry for your loss" she says in a monotone voice."Miss we hate to have to ask you to do this but we need you to come down and identify the bodies" the girl calls for her mother "I can't " Is all she says leaving the police to have to explain everything to the mother who quickly nods running inside to put the baby down.She then moves her daughter  out of the doorway to a near by couch. running to the officers informed her that she should follow them there. When the mother got there she was horrified to see her beautiful grandchild on a sliver table under a drape she quickly confirmed it was her well trying to hold back tears.when they got to Owen she thought she was going to be sick, shocked by how the once handsome young man was now blue with death with a painful look on his face"How did this happen" she asks breaking down " They were hit by a semi. It appears that the driver was drunk based on the several beer cans found in the truck, unfortunately the driver fled the scene before we arrived." An officer explains "Did they suffer" she asks unsure she want an answer."No it was instantaneous"  a medical examiner states nonchalantly flipping through some paperwork. He then informs her she will have to sign so she can take the possessions  that were with them.She collects the belongings only to find a beautiful ring realizing that if her daughter seen this she would be crushed. her mother put the ring in her pocket and went to sell it so her daughter would never have to deal with that pain.Not realizing that on the inside was a inscription only Owen and her daughter would understand.
