I pulled at my hair as my locker continued not to shut properly. Someone had damaged the lock so the door kept swinging open and I was already over five minutes late.

"Yo Jayda!" Ice was walking past, probably skipping class to go play basketball. He put his hand out to dap me up but I ignored it and put my head against the locker next to mine. I was stressed and being on your period doesn't help.

"What's wrong with you?" He looked genuinely concerned.
"Someone's fucked up the lock," I say pointing at the door still swinging. He laughed at me and caught the door inspecting the lock.
"I'll fix it it's fine," he said wrapping his arms round my shoulders and dragging me with him.

"Boy, I got class n my mama already on my ass for skipping. Where we going?"
"Basketball duh," he said chucking the ball to me.
"You know I can't say no to that," I said laughing. "Is Jazz meeting us there?"
"No clue, haven't spoken to him since this morning."

"Cmon man gimme some competition, i'm playing air," I taunted him, laughing my head off. He rolled his eyes and checked the ball to me. I faked to shoot and as he jumped up to block me, I dribbled round his right side and did a lay up.

"I want Will back at least I had some competition back then!" I was laughing so much my stomach hurt. Ice always gets sensitive when it comes to basketball so I loved being better than him.

"Nah, nah I'm going easy on you. You being a girl and that," he made up excuses.
"Don't start with that patriarchal bullshit, it's alright for a girl to be better than you mate. Don't project your insecurities on me," I bantered back at him sassily.

I had a stitch and didn't know whether it was 'cos of the basketball or the laughing.
He fake scowled at me before laughing too.
"Wait wait wait!" I ran out the court leaving Ice looking baffled with both his hands up in the air. I went to the pay phone and put my last quarter in. I entered Wills number and let the phone ring.

"Yo, It's the finest Will of the land, who's this?"
I stifled my laugh.
"It's your favourite personnnn."
"Jay!!!"
"Will!" I mocked him.
"They've got a mansion Jay. Like a full on mansion with a balcony and a pool and a butler. Oh my god we got a butler Jay it's crazy!" he rambled on to me.
"Sounds good, I'm happy for you," I tried to hide my sadness of him leaving me.

"The moneys great and that but everyone here, it's like talking to a wall! It's always 'Will turn that music off' or 'Will stop being a nuisance.' Like what does nuisance even mean?" I laughed at his inability to understand the word nuisance and went on to tell him about mine and Ice's game.

"It's like thirty to six, I'm just amazing," I joked.
"Yeah yeah we'll have a game and see if I can humble you huh?" he joked back.

The automated voice told me there was thirty seconds left of our call.

"Look Will the calls about to end and I got no more money but call me tonight yeah? See if you can get your aunt to send me money for a taxi up to you guys and I could stay for a bit."
"Yeah will do. Stay safe yeah? No more fights, I'm not gonna be there to back you anymore," he said in a serious tone.
"Stop acting like a brother you don't control me," I said laughing.
The phone started beeping signally the end of the call.
"Safe," he said
"Safe."

I trudged back to the court and watched Ice attempt to dunk from the sidelines. He kept missing which was good. As soon as he knows how to dunk he'd be better than me. I'm 5'5 which isn't tiny but definitely isn't tall enough to be able to dunk.

He sprinted up the court and launched himself into the air, his head just missing the rim. I doubled over laughing to the point I couldn't breathe and I started to cough.
