Entanglement

Rude woman!! Rude!!!!

"Comrade, what has got you in such a snit?"

Comrade Ju Meok, there are countless places where we could bury that South Korean woman in our country. Just she wait!

"What did she do now?"

Who does she thinks she is? First, ordering us to drop her off where she landed? Even Captain Ri doesn't give orders like that! Then, shebtells us South Koreans eat meat two times a day? Who eats meat two times a day? She'll have high cholesterol and die early!

"Comrade, are you angry that she talks back to you or concerned for her health? Make up your mind."

I'm not -

Perhaps I am. Okay, who am I fooling? Of course, I am. Don't tell her I said that. She's already too full of herself.

Psssh!! Very rich swallow! Why would a bird be rich? It is an animal!

Picky princess? What a bull! If she is not talking, she is chewing food. At the rate she is going, Capt. Ri will not have food come winter season.

This woman and her porkies is making me crazy.

But I like it. Secretly. Otherwise, if she knows about how I purposely goads her, she'll have another ace up her sleeves.

It's bad enough that she knows I was drinking alcohol while on the job that day she crash landed in North Korea. She doesn't need more.

Let her think I will bury her in the mountains when the opportunity strikes.

Let her think that she has a lousy capitalist heart.

She doesn't have to know that, same with the captain and the boys, I will do eveything to protect her from the State Security Department.

Because, she, a woman from the south, saw the Pyo Chi Su behind the bravado.

I remember it so clearly.

"Madam, you said you know Ji Woo. I have a question."

"Yes, I already told you she used to be my neighbor."

"She has beautiful hair. When you get back, can you ask her to send her shampoo and conditioner to Pyo Chi Su? His hair smells like poop."

My hair. It has been the butt of a joke ever since I was a child and even at  camp.

Flaked with snowy dandruff.

Smelled like burnt chicken feathers.

Rat's nest.

Horse tail.

I learned how to take it in stride. Afterall, there was truth to it. Besides, I throw around comments like that like a confetti, too.

"Ya! Ju Meok, don't joke like that. It's rude. You might offend Chi Su's feelings."

I was taken aback. Nobody did something like that to me before. Not even the captain.

It's fine, Woman. Comrade, if you live in a hometown where clean water is as scarce as money, buying shampoo will be the least of your priorities.

Ju Meok, Kwang Beom and Eun Dong profusely apologized for laughing while I shrug it off as if it was nothing.

Today, as she said her farewells and give each of the boys their awards, the woman from the south, gave me special ones. Priceless ones.

It became clear to me then: the captain and my other comrades are my brothers in arms and will take a bullet for me as I will do for them but this infuriating woman has earned my respect and loyalty, something I didn't expect, given that she is South Korean.
