Useful Expressions in Everyday Setting

* The word in a parenthesis can be dropped, but it's better to say the whole phrase because it's polite.

Mini Dialogues:

     1. A: Itte rasshai.
       “So long.”/“Go and come back.”

        B:  Itte kimasu.
        “So long.”/“I’ll go and come back.”

     2. A: Tadaima.
       "I’m back/home.”

       B:  Okaeri nasai.
       “Welcome home.”

     3. A: Ogenki desu ka.
      “How are you?”

     B:  Hai, genki desu.                                                “Yes, I’m fine.”                                        *There are three ways to respond to A. "Hai" means "yes."

        B’:  Okagesama de, genki desu.
        “Thanks to you, I’m fine.”

        B”:  Ee, okagesama de.
        “Yes, thanks to you....”
** "Ee" means "yes," but it's casual. Please use "hai" in class.

     4. A: (Doomo) arigatoo (gozaimasu).
      “Thank you (very much).”

        B:  Doo itashimashite.
        “You’re welcome.”

Note:  We don't say "How are you?" to people that we see every day.  Instead, we talk about the weather.

     1. Moo ichi-do itte kudasai.
     “Please say it again.”

     2. Chotto matte kudasai.
     “Please wait for a moment.”

     3. Wakarimasen.
     “I don’t understand.”

     4. Wakarimashita.
     “I understood.”

     5. Shitsumon ga arimasu.
     “I have a question.”

     6. Mina-san, issho ni itte kudasai.
     “Everyone, please say it together.”

     7. Renshuu shite kudasai.
     “Please practice.”

     8. Nihongo de hanashite kudasai.
     “Please speak in Japanese.”

     9. Yonde kudasai.
     “Please read.”

     10. Kiite kudasai.
     “Please listen.”

     11. Mite kudasai.
     “Please look.”

     12. Kaite kudasai.
     “Please write.”

     13. Tatte kudasai.
     “Please stand up.”

     14. Suwatte kudasai.
     “Please sit down.”

     15. Noun wa nihongo de nan to iimasuka.
     “How do you say _N_ in Japanese?”
