Walking blindly through the dense forest I was lost, completely, utterly, lost. Not even the Zombies were around, which was what worried me the most.
The tall trees loomed above me, the leaves very vibrant in contrast to the sky, the only thing that comforted me were the occasional bird calls from the trees above. After walking for what seemed like hours I heard the sound of water, A STREAM! at least I won't starve, in the meanwhile... I still had a deep unsatiated hunger, but I made do with the water.
To fill the now quiet of the evening I began to sing the nursery rhymes Cherry used to sing to me as a child, I began to fill the quiet with my own voice, it does seem pretty childish but the silence can be scary.
"Row, row, row your boat, gently down the stream"
"Merrily merrily, merrily, merrily Life is but a dream"
Everybody thought the zombies were a dream, just one they couldn't wake up from, It was never a dream for me though cuz I'm a "pocalypse kid" this is just my life, I mean you can't miss what you never had but Cherry's stories always feel so magical, she even said they had something called rollercoasters, I would love to ride them someday.
Suddenly I heard a loud, sharp crack.
there's someone or something up ahead. I quickly found a low-hanging tree branch and climbed on top, so I can at least have some leverage, but as I scan the immediate surrounding area, it was just a squirrel... but since I was already way up high I decided to look far ahead to see if there were any roads leading out of this hell hole.
No such luck, but I did see some smoke up ahead, which isn't exactly great because what I've learned is that zombies may kill you, but humans betray you.
Seeing no other options I quietly make my way through the treacherous path, filled with roots sticking up above the ground, and with some newly acquired scrapes and cuts and a need for bandages, Ah don't you love the outdoors. I soon find three scrawny-looking people, who look like they haven't eaten for days, which they probably haven't, I see some water so even if they did, these people would have a hard time taking me down, that's for sure.
"Hi, do you guys know of any nearby roads I can take out of here?" As soon as those words left my mouth, they looked at me with desperation. Dumb Athena! they wouldn't be looking so starved if they weren't lost.
The scrawny-looking guy with hollow cheekbones and a scar running through his cheek says "Ah no, do you perhaps have any food you can spare, my group and I got stuck out here, after narrowly avoiding a close-call with some zombies" I can definitely see that.
With a grimace on my face, I say "No, sorry I don't have any food, I guess since you guys don't know then, I'll be on my way" In truth, I did have food, a few chocolate bars that would have been all gone if I did share, they most likely wouldn't have even wanted to try to leave because, from the looks of it, it seems like they've given up finding a way out probably all got bitten. Pondering their situation I start to leave just as this blond-haired guy grabbed my shoulder.
"Hey! What The Hell, let go" I quickly shoved his hand away.
"Please, stay it'd be nice to have another pair of eyes to help with" This guy looks delusional, and he had on a way to creepy smile, I don't trust them enough to stay... I should just make a compromise to get him off me.
"Here's what, if I find a road I'm gonna send some help your way, I mean I don't think I can really get you all help, but I'll make sure you guys aren't forgotten though." The brunette nodded her head at the scarred guy and they let me go. But I could feel their gazes staring daggers at my back and I felt little pinpricks of dread for what was to come.
