Again, here's another Scribble that I really liked and had to continue. :p Also, this in the the world of Iris, the one I made up but this takes place after my other story in this world called 'Once Upon a Legend.' That story is on my profile if you want to read it.
Enjoy, I guess.
"What is that thing?" Kara asks as the trio gazes at the rock. "All I can say is that it's powerful."
"It's an egg." August says in a bored tone, like it was obvious what this thing was. "But looking at it won't help us. We need to move."
She starts to continue walking, only to have to go back. "-I mean it's huge!" Orion continues. "Do you think it's close to hatching?"
Kara starts to talk but August bets her to it. "That doesn't matter. We have a mission to finish. Not to mention you're gonna die of heatstroke, Orion. Now, let's go-"
A cracking sound rings out, making the three look over. The egg was starting to open. All they could see was a sunset seeping out of it. Inside, the gems were infused with those same colors.
The other two backed away while August takes two steps forward. She couldn't explain it, but she was drawn to the egg.
"What are you doing?" Kara hisses.
Without saying anything, not even bothering to spare a glance at her companions, she was next to the egg. In all her life August never felt smaller then she did next to this. The egg looks to be 20ft even, but August couldn't think of any creature that would need an egg this big.
Only, when she peaks inside, a barely audible gasp escapes her lips.
Laying in the middle of a cluster of gems is an animal the same colors of the desert around them. Without thinking things through, August starts to carefully climb over the crystals.
After her first few steps in, they started to move out of her way, giving her no trouble of getting to the middle. When she gets there, August knees down as the creature wakes up. Lazily lifting it's head, the creature looks up at August and makes eye contact.
It's eyes held a sunset in each, all the colors perfectly blending together. Compared to it's desert scales, the eyes stood out against the world outside of the egg. If August had to guest, the color of the scales were to help it blend in and catch prey. But in here, the eyes were the only thing that was hidden.
"Hey little buddy." August whispers as the creature keeps it's stare fixed on her. Only it's broken when the baby animal yawns. "Okay, now that was adorable." The words felt wrong in her mouth. It's been years since she last said anything like that.
The baby continues yawning as it stretches out it's front legs and folds on top of it's back, before doing the same thing just in reverse. It looks at August once again before letting out a small high pitched 'Awh'.
After that, the animal crawls to the gems before hitting them with a very small blast of fire. It wouldn't have hurt much if the fire hit a human, but it melted the wall. Leaving no obstacles in between the two.
After rubbing it's snot with it's feet, the baby continues on it's path to August. Once it was in distance, it leaps into August's lap and turns a few times before laying down. It was as big as a pocket notebook and as wide as the four fingers of a 13 year old.
"You seem comfortable with me already." August says in a hushed tone as she scratches behind two it's head fins, flaps things. It makes a soft purring sound in the back of it's throat. "Why is that?"
"August?" Orion calls, making the baby jump and hide between her torso and arm. "Are you okay in there?"
Holding the baby creature close, taking the time to make sure it was comfortable, August stands and makes her way out of the egg. When she steps out she excepted to be blinded by the sun, but instead realizes how much light was really being held in.
The world looked darker now.
"What's in your arms?" Kara asks, getting on edge.
"What does it look like, genius?" August shifts the baby so the other two could see it.
"A dragon." Orion breaths out, in complete awe. While Kara was just staring at August. "I thought they went extinct years ago."
"That's what they wanted us to think that's what happened." August says, scratching behind the fins again. Making the dragon purr. "We've been told lies ever since the Legends from the time of the Gem War died."
Kara scoffs under her breath, like she didn't believe what she was hearing. "You don't know that, August. Just because we found one dragon doesn't mean the Legends have been lying to us for a thousand years." The 'besides, what do you know?' went unsaid, but August knew she was asking that.
"I know more then you do. After all, I bet you can't name the kind of dragon this is."
"And you can?" A smirk spreads on her lips at this, glad Kara took the bate. August knew she needed to get along with Kara or the plan would fail, but she couldn't really care about that. Kara was still just a little girl that grew up with money, had maids doing everything around the house, playing with her stupid potions all day, and never had to work for anything.
So anytime August had a chance to show her up in things like this, she took it.
"He's a Desert Set dragon. Their eggs look like geodes, simple rocks on the outside, but sunset infused crystals inside. They hatch at either sunrise or sunset and that lets you know which gender it is." August says, not caring about the smug smile she had. "Since the sun is currently rising, this little guy is a male."
"Impressive." Orion says, while Kara just rolls her eyes.
"You're not keeping that thing are you?" Kara asks, wanting to move away from the fact that August knows more about something that involved magic than she did.
After all, August is just a low life Usual that steals for a living.
