I was sitting in my living room on a rainy day doing some homework, looking up every now and then to watch TV. It's peaceful. I was alone, minding my own business when the front door slammed open. A tall bulky dark man comes in soaked from the rain. He proceeds to slam the door shut. It was my father. I quickly stand up and rush to the door to see him frantically looking around. He has his gun out... he never takes his gun out. He is dripping wet and his knuckles are red, with blood.
''Where is your mother?" he says through his teeth. "She went to the store with Everly to get food for dinner" As soon as I said 'store' he muttered a curse word. There is a pause, but he gives me instructions "Cover the windows. Draw the blinds. Turn off the light. Grab everything you can to cover your mouth, nose, and eyes. Grab canned food and bottles of water. There is a stash in the gun safe. The code is 3453." I look at him, wide-eyed, mouth open. He starts to walk throughout the house. He picks up cloth, ammo, rope, and a hat. He doesn't acknowledge the fact that he is freaking me out, he just keeps rummaging around.
After he gets everything he needs, he looks at me. His expression is blank when he says "After you do all of that, go into me and your mothers closet. In there you will find a room behind the clothes with a lock. The key is in my pair of books in the back. Lock yourself in. You should be set in there for a couple of hours." I don't know what to think of this. I just stand there, thoughts racing in my head trying to think of what is happening. The apocalypse? World War III? Did a prisoner escape? He looks down at me and we just stand there, looking at each other. I hear screaming and gunshots, but before I can make a noise, he runs up to me and hugs me tightly. "Billie, it is going to be ok. I will be back. I promise." He kisses the top of my head and I look up at him. I notice his eyes glistening with tears. I want to cry. I don't know what is happening. I am just a helpless 10 year old. I think to myself
"I am going to find your mother and sister. Do as I told you too" He lets go of me and I stumble backwards. He turns around and holds onto the door handle. He pauses and looks behind me, "I love you Billie" he says. "I love you too Daddy" I replied. He gives me a smile and that small gesture makes me feel safer somehow. He opens the door and slams it shut. I stand there shaking. A million thoughts rushing to my head. I want to be safe. I want my family to be safe. I realize there are things I have to do, I knock the thoughts out of my head and try to remember what he said.
"Cover the windows. Draw the blinds. Turn off the light." I race to the windows and use everything and anything to cover it. I use the blanket I was just using while doing my homework. I remember thinking that it was peaceful. I got the pillows from my bed and Everly's. She is my sister and usually I wish she would disappear, but now I want her right in front of me.
Her bed was pretty tiny since she was short, unlike me who was taller for my age. I look around her room and notice hair ties paired with a brush. She used that to keep her long blonde hair in braids so it would be out of her face while she worked. There is a big difference between us. I like excitement and she likes being safe. Where I am from, school is hard to get into. The school around us trains you, physically and mentally. They make you study like you're a surgeon, but make you train like you're in the military. Not everyone can get into it. It is considered a luxury, many people can't even qualify, never-mind paying for it. I dreamed of going to school. I was qualified for it. I was at the right age, we had enough money, I knew the basics, and was determined. I got into it by working hard in the community, the whole neighborhood put money in to help pay. I was so happy!
My sister, on the other hand, didn't care for it. She knew how to read and write, since our parents taught us, but she wanted to stay with our parents. So as I went to school, our mom taught her how to bake so she could help make money. Everly loved baking. Since she was 2 years older, she had more freedom. That means she could sell her cookies and pies without extra supervision. We needed that extra money too, school hurt us a lot. My parents didn't care, they just wanted to see me happy and I was, until I met Eryk Christensen. He is the worlds most cruel, ugly, stupid boy ever. I told my family about him and they made me swear to never say his name again.
I shudder at the thought of his name but I shake it out of my head as I draw the blinds and turn the lights off. I grab something to cover my nose and mouth. I got some goggles from the basement and brought them with me while I grabbed the cans and water. I stuff it into my school bag that I emptied out on the ground. I stare at my books and papers. My pens and notebooks all over the ground, I didn't care though, I just wanted my family to be safe.
I go into my parents closet and rummage around in it. I find the small door and place my fingers on the keyhole. Damn it, where did he say he put it? I look around the room and hear a crash not so far away. I begin to freak out and go back into the closest, I look under the shoes and all the clothes. I start to throw everything around then I hear the key hit the ground. I scramble to find it then I hear footsteps inside the house. I open the door and slam it shut right as I hear talking.
