Surprisingly, the first person to move forward was Han Myungoh.
"You little brat. Didn't they teach you to respect your elders..?!" Han Myungoh grabbed Kim Namwoon's wrist, preventing him from attacking her any further.
"Huh?" But Kim Namwoon only replied to Han Myungoh with disdain. "What the hell, old man? Do you wanna die too?"
"What?"
"Can't you see what's going on here?"
"What the hell are you talking about, you brat?!"
"Over there. Don't you see that?" he pointed to the glowing blue screen at the end of the carriage and laughed. "Don't you get it? The army isn't going to save us.. and someone has to die."
The looks of bloodlust and terror from the people being projected on the holographic screens, strangled yelps of pain, and the violent sound of blood dripping to the floor were all playing on the ceiling. It wasn't just train carriages or Daepong High School; it was live videos of people dying everywhere in the country.
"We have to choose the ones who die.." Kim Namwoon said, raising the grandmother's collar in his hand. "I know exactly what you're thinking. You think we're all above that. How can we kill others to survive just like wild animals?"
Han Myungoh's shoulders tensed. It wasn't just him. The people's ambiguous morals were all collapsing, and Kim Namwoon was the man that hammered the nail in the coffin. He was the person who adopted to the world of TWSA the fastest.
"Normally, I would agree with you. But what about the situation we're in now? We have no choice. It's kill or be killed. Who can blame us when our own lives are on the line? Think wisely. The world you knew just ended."
His words convinced the people next to him. And this time, no one tried to stop him from beating the poor woman. Not Han Myungoh, not the bystanders, not even Lee Hyunsung.
"And in this new world.. We have new laws to follow."
They couldn't do anything but accept the new reality unravelling in front of their eyes.
"How long are you all going to gawk? You all wanna die?" Kim Namwoon snickered, dropping the old lady to the floor and continuing to punch her. People's eyes changed from remorse to selfishness in an instant. It was easy to tell.
It was at that very moment that Kim Dokja recalled a line from the novel.
「The executioners pull the lever at the same time— 」
People came over with balled fists. They all became like vultures, or ants that swarmed one prey. They were like animals and attacked their own kind. It was the same as the ants that (L/n) (M/n) took care of.
「—So it remains unknown who killed the person on the death row. 」
.
(M/n) bit the inside of his bottom lip, shrinking away from what he was just watching. He couldn't do it. He couldn't save that person, since it would also cost the killer's life. It was a lose-lose situation for him.
Other people joined in, in desperation to live — kicking the elderly woman on the floor as she shook. 'If no one dies in five minutes, everyone will die here...'
"They're going to kill her!" A woman caught (M/n)'s eye. She tried to run after the grandmother to save her. But a man with jet black hair grabbed her shoulder and blocked her way towards the vultures.
"Don't be reckless. It's dangerous!" the stranger warned her. He furrowed his brows and his stare was enough to calm her from running off. "If you go, they'll kill you too!!"
