It took me 4 inconsistent years to get to the level I am now. Not going to lie, often my covers were made months apart from each other and I'm not talking about the examples above, I'm talking about everything I've ever made. If you're consistent and willing to keep trying then you'll get better wayyy faster than I did.
Consistent practice is key.
2. Look at the work of popular or good graphic/ cover designers on Wattpad. Look for the little details, carefully analyse title placement and model poses. Examine the background, hmm how many fonts have been used...? Colours? Etc.
Look at EVERYTHING in little bits and pieces. Don't see the cover as one, see it in layers and separate entities. Your perspective will change and I guarantee that will start noticing an improvement in your own work. Obviously you should ultimately acknowledge the graphic as one piece, but if you want to learn more then you have to literally read between the lines.
BUT I'm not saying you should copy them. Please don't copy others work, it's self-explanatory. No one appreciates their hard work being stolen or someone else falsely taking credit. What I am saying though is to understand why they're doing what their doing. Don't copy, but understand.
3. Stop calling your work tRaShY.Don't like something about your work? That's okay, figure out what you don't like about it and how you could improve it or avoid the mistake in the future. Stop calling your work trash, I'm so tired of hearing that word in the designing community on Wattpad😭
4. Create covers or manips for your favourite Wattpad books (or even a hardcopy book). This is great for practice. Don't create it with the expectation that the author is going to use it, do it so you can get more experience. By creating covers for a pre existing storyline or book, you'll already have an idea on what the vibe of the cover should be. I know the feeling of wanting to design something real bad, but having zero inspiration. Creating something from scratch is especially difficult in this scenario. Use this method when you're starting out, if you have artist block or just need some practice. It helps!
Don't forget to acknowledge the author and book.
5. Ask yourself: What covers are you best at and what cover style is your weak point?
For example: If you realise that perhaps you're no good at light teen fic kinda covers but great at dark manipulations, start focusing on why you're good or bad. Only design what you're good at and see how you feel. You might realise that you enjoy it enough to focus on that style only, or you might realise that you want to be good at all styles and if so, you should continue working on your manip skills (or any other weak points), correcting your mistakes.
6. Add depth to your design, by blurring pieces of your backgrounds. Blur some layers that are near or directly in front of the 'camera'. This creates some realism.
See how the leaves are blurred at different intensities? It creates depth and will take your work to the next level.
I'm not even exaggerating. You HAVE to try this.
