Yancy - The other leader

Start from the beginning

Before Mark could say something I shook my head angrily, so he just shoved his bowl in front of me so I could at least eat a little bit. "Thanks" I whispered, but my appetite was gone, the confrontation with Yancy left me with a feeling of anger in my stomach, but for some reason, there was also... pain? Why was I hurt because of some douchebag who I didn't even care about? As soon as the bell that announced work time rang, I got up and ran back to my cell.

---

I spent the next few hours pondering over my feelings. I sure was lucky to have Mark as my right hand because he managed to keep everyone away from me and organized the meetings for our gang on his own. It was half-past eleven, at least I thought it was, I never was really good at reading clocks. With a big sigh I got up and at the same time Mark came back into our cell. "Hey Y/N, do you need anything?" he asked concerned. I gifted him a small smile before replying. "I don't think so, but I've got to go soon. Did you inform everyone?" I took some tape out of our desk and began wrapping it around my hands. He nodded and put his hand on mine "You will be more alone than the flag on the moon, just be careful out there, okay?"
With a smooth motion I finished up wrapping my hands. "I'll be fine Mark, also I can't just leave you and the rest of the gang all alone in here, even though I know you'd manage just fine without me" I lightly pressed his hands, but Mark pulled me into a hug which took me by surprise.

"I know, it's just that you and Yancy never had such a direct confrontation all alone, usually there was someone around who could be there in an emergency, you're my closest friend, I can't lose you, I just can't..." While speaking he started sobbing so I just pressed him against my chest, whispering "Everything will be alright" over and over until he stopped trembling in my arms. Slowly he pulled away and wiped his eyes with his sleeve. "I think you have to go now..." Mark whispered and smiled weakly. "I promise I'll be okay, let's steal some snacks from the kitchen together afterwards, 'kay?" He nodded with a defeated look. Pressing his hands one more time, I left the cell, determined to kick Yancy's ass.

---

"Youse are late!" Yancy yelled as soon as I stepped onto the courtyard. "Yeah, yeah, can we just get over with this?" I replied annoyed, now standing only a few meters away from him. With a quick motion he pushed himself off the wall he was leaning against and came closer to me, staring intensely. I stared right back into his dark brown eyes. At the beginning of our stare contest, they looked stone-cold, but with time I felt like they were getting warmer and softer. "No, you're just imagining things again, why would that be a thing actually happening?" I quietly said to myself, before speaking up. "So, did you call me here just to look at me or what?"

With a laugh he approached me and I quickly raised my fists. "What a pity, Ise thought we could solve this with words, but Ise guess youse aren't ready for that yet" Suddenly his left fist swung forward, barely missing my face because I took a step backwards.
I threw some punches at him as a reply, but I had to admit that his dodging and blocking techniques were quite refined. To any outsiders our fight would have probably looked more like a dance or performance because we hardly ever landed a hit that irritated our opponent for longer than a split second. This went on for a while until our eyes met.

Like a wave drawing back into the sea, all my anger and urge to fight washed away. I slowly lowered my fists and saw that Yancy had the same reaction. We stepped closer to each other and he cupped my face in his hands. "Ise don't understand, why did Ise want to hurt youse so bad? It makes no sense, this gorgeous face should never be bruised..." This magic that had taken over left me speechless, so I just wrapped my arms around Yancy and leaned against his shoulder for some time. I took in the smell of his sweat, mixed with a sweet shampoo. His hands on my back felt warm, even hot and for the first time after months, I felt at home again.

Fearing that I could break this spell with quick motions, I slowly looked into his eyes again and saw the same warmth from earlier in them. "This feels so unreal" I whispered, "Can you please pinch me so I know it's not a dream?"
"Ise don't want to pinch youse, but Is think Ise know another way to find out" Yancy's eyes switched between looking at my eyes and my lips multiple times and with a slight nod I encouraged him to close the gap between us. Softly, as if he feared to hurt me otherwise, his chapped lips pressed against mine and another wave of happiness rolled over me. My hands flimsily held onto his head, gently pulling on some strains of his hair. Our lips started moving against each other and my closed eyes started seeing an explosion of bright colours, almost overwhelming but also soothing me even more at the same time.

The bell announcing lunchtime brutally pulled the two of us back into reality. I opened my eyes wide and hastily got a little bit of distance between us. "I-I have to go now" I stammered quickly and turned around, but Yancy held onto my arm for the second time on that day. "Please Y/N, youse can't just leave things all messy like this, we have to talk about this" his pleading expression almost made me stay, but instead I lightly removed my arm from his grip. "I'll meet you here 30 minutes before dinner" I whispered into his ear, and as if to seal this promise, I kissed his lips, with a touch as light as a butterfly's wing. "Oh, and please don't tell anyone about this yet", I added and swiftly went to the door leading back into the main building, barely holding back my smile.
