I woke up wondering why I was so happy.

I almost never woke up happy; always either sad or just tired. But today, I was strangely excited. I didn't know why until I checked my phone.

Melissa had texted me. My heart fluttered like a freaking butterfly. She was wondering if I wanted to hang out. I responded: "Hell yeah!" Like... duh, of course I do. Especially since it was Saturday, and we had all day.

She gave me her address and I told her I would be there ASAP. I threw on the cutest outfit I could find that didn't look like a hand me down from Sofia the 20th and thanked whichever parent had passed down the talent of good navigation. I shouted over my shoulder to Angela to tell her I was leaving and I was gone.

I was there in 20 minutes, even though my phone had said it would take 25. When Melissa opened the door to let me in, she laughed at how excited I looked. But it was in a nice way.

"You look beautiful," she said. I hardly heard her. Her hair was up in a messy bun, and she looked stunning.

"No you," I murmured quietly.

"What was that?" she asked.

"You look amazing too," I said louder. What an understatement.

"Well, come on in. Sorry if my room is messy."

Her room wasn't messy. not at all, compared to mine. She had three books on the ground and that was it.

We plopped onto her bed and began talking. I learned that she wanted to be a doctor, she learned that I wanted to teach. We learned that we both loved coffee and cats, and were both terrified of chickens. We talked about everything.

"Do you like reading?" I asked her after a few hours. I had been wondering all day, after seeing the books on the floor.

Her face lit up. "Yes! It might seem a little nerdy, but I've loved reading since I was a kid."

"I love reading too!" I responded enthusiastically. "What's your favorite genre?"

"Ooh, probably fantasy or mystery," she replied. "And you?"

I was embarrassed to answer. "Well... I kindalikeromance."

"You like what?"

"Romance," I said louder, blushing. "Especially the really fluffy, happy romances where there's no worry or sadness."

Melissa grinned. "I like them too. Kinda makes me with I had someone, ya know?"

"You don't have anyone?" I asked, shocked that such a stunning girl could be single.

"Of course not. I wouldn't have asked you out if I did, would I?"

"No, I guess not." I looked down nervously, keeping my blue eyes from looking into her caramel ones. "Um, about that. Did you really mean it?"

"Yeah I meant it, of course. I don't joke about that sort of thing... much," she replied. She gently rested her fingers under my chin and forced me to look into her eyes. "And the offer still stands."

At that moment, my stomach seemed to explode into a million fireworks and butterflies. I had a sudden urge to kiss her, to touch her. "My answer... my answer is yes."

She grinned. "I thought so." She leaned forward until our foreheads almost touched. "And I'll have you know, I'm going to treat you right."

The next thing I knew, we were both moving even closer together. Our lips were millimeters apart. "Is this okay?" Melissa whispered. I nodded. It wasn't just okay; it was the only thing I wanted.

Our lips smashed together, a little harder than we intended. Neither of us cared. Her lips were so soft, and her red hair smelled so good, like strawberries. Her fingers slipped into my hair, and I pressed even closer to her. I wanted this moment to last forever.

But of course, it didn't. There was a knock on the door, and we broke apart, obviously not happy about it. "Come in," Melissa called.

At the exact moment the door opened, I realized that I must have gotten some of Melissa's firey red lipstick on me. Her eyes widened; I did. I turned and pretended to sneeze, wiping off as much as I could.

When I turned to face the door, a boy a few years younger than me was watching me. "This your girlfriend, Melissa?" he asked, smirking.

"I don't know," she answered him, glancing at me. "Are you my new girlfriend?"

I considered. If I had any guardian besides Angela, I would have said yes immediately. But Angela was insanely controlling. She would kill me if she found out. But still... "If we can hide it from Angela, then yes."

Melissa broke into a huge grin. "Alright, get out of here, Jake," she said to the boy. "And close the door behind you."

I didn't go home for several more hours after that.
