1. What Happened Before

He led her to the boat and helped her on. Eret opened the cabin door and spread some of the blankets on the bed for Kierra to lay on and be warm. She held the baby and bounced him gently as Eret prepared a place for them to rest. When he was done, he beckoned her to lie down on the bed. She walked over and lay down on the furs. She placed the baby beside her and watched him sleep.

"I'm sorry for all this happening especially since we have nothing left for you both." Eret said seating himself on the end of the bed.

"It's fine. We couldn't ask for anything better. What matters is that the baby will be safe for the night now." Kierra said giving him a small smile. Eret smiled back and looked at the baby.

"What are we going to name him?" He asked as he watched the infant sleep.

"I'm not sure but we'll think of something." Kierra replied smiling.

The next morning, Kierra had woken to people shouting shouting. Fearing that the dragon rider from the night before had returned, she leapt out of the bed and flew out the door. Once she reached where she heard the source of the screaming, she crouched behind a large chunk of ice and slowly poked her head over the side of the ice, just enough to see what was going on.

Eret was standing on a blue and yellow spike Deadly Nadder and talking to two younger people who were standing on either side of a large black dragon. She heard one of the strangers yell something and the black dragon fired at the ice colum.

"Eret move!" She yelled, leaping over the ice she was hiding behind and rushing towards him. She skidded to a stop when Eret and several trappers leapt out of the way of the ice before it crashed to the floor.

One of the riders, a boy, leapt forward to the trapped Nadder and cut it loose before the other rider, a girl, leapt onto it's back and the two dragons took off into the air.

"You will never keep those dragons! Drago is coming for them all!" Eret yelled. Once the riders were out of sight, he turned his attention to Kierra who was helping one of the trappers off the floor and walked to them.

"You alright?" He asked when he approached them.

"I hink he sprained his ankle when he jumped out of the way." Kierra said as the man winced in pain. "If I had my Heart of Heart, I could easily repair the muscles-"

"Why didn't you stay with the baby?" Eret asked, interrupting her.

"I heard you all shouting and ran out here to see what was wrong." Kierra explained. "Why do you ask? Think that just because I recently had a baby I can't try to protect you?"

"You were supposed to be resting Kierra! You had a baby last night and you need plenty of rest." Eret scolded and began ushering her back to the boat but Kierra quickly moved out of the way.

"I am fine Eret!" She snapped. "I have rested enough already! Don't you see that I am tired of everyone treating me like I am a delicate object?"

"I know, but what happened to you a few months back is the reason why I am trying to protect you." Eret said reaching forward and placing a hand on her cheek.

"Eret, today's the day we need to head to Drago to deliver the shipment of dragons." One of the trappers informed him.

"Why? We don't have any dragons to give him unless you are suggesting we give him Kierra!" said another trapper. The others glared at him and he realized what he said. "Sorry." he mumbled.

"He's right. I might have to give myself to Drago to make up for all the missing dragons. He should-"

"No you are not giving yourself to him Kierra!" Eret said grabbing her by the shoulders and having her face him. "I forbid it! You may have a special gift but you are not using it to satisfy Drago. That is the last thing any of us will ever do. Right lads?" The men answered in a chorus of yes and nodding. "We'll catch some dragons along the way, and when we get our payment I will make it up to you Kierra I promise you that." He said hugging her tightly. "I can't lose you."
