After most of the people had left, including King Jack and Prince Philip, who were going to be staying in Eliandre until after the wedding, my father turned to me. "Aurora, I'm sorry I didn't mention this before, but I wanted it to be a surprise for you. Besides, Philip is a good young man. He'll make a good husband for you, and you'll have a good life!" He patted my head, messing up my hair. A light red strand of it fell in front of my face.

"Anyways," he said, "to make sure nothing inturrupts this wedding, I've hired an assassin to make sure nothing happens to you. They're almost here, and they're supposed to be the best of the best."

I blinked. "An assassin?" I asked, curious. I knew that this wedding would make Eliandre and Cauldor would be a problem for the rest of the countries, but my father and King Jack were smart enough to keep it a secret. Unless...

"Do you think there's a spy in this castle or in King Jack's castle?" I asked, whispering. My father sighed, rubbing his temples. "Possibly. Jack and Philip got attacked on their way here, and it was only thanks to Philip's good swordsmanship that they survived. That's why they got here a little late."

"What about their guards?" I asked.

"All except two were killed, and one of the survivors was injured."

"Did Prince Philip kill the assassin?" I was getting more and more nervous at the sound of this, but I couldn't back down. Besides, if what my father was telling me was true, and Prince Philip was good with a sword, then I would be protected.

"No."

I sighed in defeat. "Do we know at least what kingdom they were from?"

"No."

"Let's pray to the gods that this assassin is good or-"

"Or what, princess?" I turned to where the sound came from, a hidden door behind the throne used only for escaping. I blinked in surprise as the assassin walked forward. I thought that they were going to be a man, but instead I was faced with a girl a few inches shorter than me. She looked about my age with short, black, fluffy hair and hazel eyes. She was also dressed from head to toe in black, including an expensive looking black cloak, and two silver swords. And she was wearing pants. It was incredibly uncommon for women to wear pants, especially since men thought it was a bad idea.

Based off of her choice of outfit and weapons, she probably earned a lot of money from her work, meaning she was a good assassin. Probably better than that.

She bowed to the king, which was even odder, but seeing as though she was wearing pants, she probably didn't care about what anybody thought of her.

"Leila of Aliare, your majesty."

hello yes. ur probably wondering wtf an aliare is. idk. i just searched rare fantasy names and changed one up a little bit. u pronounce it as (all-e-air) btw. ok back to the story

"You must be the famous assassin, Miss Leila. I believe you already know what your duty is?"

Leila stood up, crossing her arms. "To protect your daughter, Princess Aurora."

My father nodded. "You'll stay in the same room that Aurora was moved to until the wedding. I've already had a bed set up for you."

"Well, let's go see your room and find out how good the security here is," she said. My father nodded. "I'll have the guards take you up there, which includes the captain, who is waiting right outside. You can adjust the security in whatever way you think will make Aurora more safe."

Leila bowed again, and we walked out.

i just realized u probably don't know how to pronounce leila's name. so it's pronounced (lay-la)
