ELLIPSIS:-

The usage of an ellipsis:

As many of you all already know, an ellipsis- better known as 'dot-dot-dot'- is used when you omit a word or a phrase from a quoted passage or a narration. In addition, it's also used to indicate suspense, a pause in a thought or trailing off. Ellipses save space or remove material that is less relevant. They are useful in getting right to the point without delay or distraction.

DO's & DON'T's:

The universal value of an ellipsis is 3; nothing more, nothing less. Using more or less periods than 3 cannot be considered as an ellipsis- and hence is grammatically incorrect.
When a quotation is included within a larger sentence, do not use ellipsis points at the beginning or end of the quoted material, even if the beginning or end of the original sentence has been omitted.
When using an ellipsis in the end of a sentence where there's most likely to be a question mark, never use it after the punctuation. It's always to come before.
Using ellipses every now and then is both grammatically incorrect and could lag a write-up. It's not recommended. Use them only when needed. There're many beginners who use an ellipsis instead of just ending a sentence with a full stop.

Misunderstandings:

Yes, there is a difference between an ellipsis & an ellipse. An ellipsis, like I mentioned above, is a punctuational term, whereas an ellipse is a mathematical curve.
However, the term 'ellipses' stands for the plural term for ellipsis. It's not 'ellipseses'.

Examples:

Some examples of the usage of ellipsis could include the following:-
A pause: "I cannot explain it . . . I just love her."
Trailing off: "I have a feeling we both are thinking the same thing . . ."
Question: "What are you thinking about . . . ?"
