Chelsea stepped off the bus and into the sun and sighed contently. First day of high school; going off to a good start. Though she's read Wattpad. She knew that "goodness" doesn't last. Not in high school. Nevertheless, she soaked in the sun's heat, and decided to keep her head high, and not get dragged into some drama that didn't even concern her.

"Chelsea! Chelsea!" Chelsea turned around and saw Victoria standing there, waving at her, a grin on her face. Chelsea felt her mouth curl up into a matching smile and waved back. She started to run in her direction, calling out a greeting.

When they met at the doors of the school, Chelsea and Victoria were already gossiping about the summer, talking about possible red flags, and then talking about the best comebacks should someone insult one of them.

"I still think 'no you' is the superior comeback," Victoria declared, amusement lacing her voice.

"I disagree. Clearly, 'your mom gay' is a better one," Chelsea responded. "Either that, or 'maybe if you stanned Loona, I would have payed more attention to your words'."

"I'm sorry, did you say my mom's gay?" An arrogant, disgusting voice interrupted the two's bonding. Both turned around to see Piro, the school's most notorious jerk, standing there, smirking. "Because even with poop on your head, I would still make out with you." He wiggled his eyebrows in what is probably supposed to be a flirty gesture, but just comes off as dumb.

Chelsea's retort was so dry, even the Sahara desert would've been jealous of her tone. "I'm sorry, but did you insinuate that I would make out with you? Because I don't know if you've noticed, but," she paused so she wouldn't start laughing before she could get the rest of the sentence out, and continued, "I'm not straight." She grinned.

Piro crossed his arms, the smirk Chelsea wanted to smack off his face still there, and responded, "Oh, you're lesbian? Committing sin by just existing."

Chelsea twirled a lazy hand through the air. "Homophobic much? That's right asshole, I'm committing sin by being in your face."

Beside her, Victoria clapped her hands together. "It's nice to know I'll have a target for the next murder I commit."

"Seriously? You're talking about murder in public?" Three equally disgusting boys walked up to them, standing right behind Piro. Ugh. His 'friends'.  "That's kind of risky, don't you think?"

Now, Chelsea could pinpoint which of the three disgusting boys said that. The one on Piro's right. His second-in-command, also the most homophobic person Chelsea had ever had the pleasure of meeting. Yasir. She decided today was a good day to prove that she wasn't to be messed with. "Insulting homosexuals in public. That's kind of risky, don't you think?"

Beside her, she could feel Victoria's gentle nudge. They'd been friends for years, she knew exactly what everything meant. That nudge meant, the bell's going to ring soon, hurry the conversation up.

"Oh, and I assume both of you are lesbian? Oh look, we found ourselves a couple!" Piro's drawling voice broke through Chelsea's thoughts, but before Chelsea could respond with a scathing comment, Victoria beat her to it.
"Does platonic love mean nothing to you? Or does your braincell-less brain not understand the meaning of platonic?"

Yasir snorted. "Not understand the meeting of platonic? You wish. Most likely, 'denying it won't change anything'."

Before either girl could answer, the bell rang, and both Chelsea and Victoria, who'd already checked their schedules, ran for their homeroom class, deciding that brainless boys weren't worth their time.

DON'T KILL ME PLEASE.

Homeroom

"Well, meeting homophobias on the first day of school. Our luck sucks."

Chelsea nodded in agreement. "For real. With this luck, how am I supposed to go through with my goal?"

Victoria snorted. "Learn self defense. Notice how the only one who knows self defense isn't even here?"

She looked sideways at Victoria. "You mean Rin? She only comes when she feels like it. But who knows? Maybe she'll saunter in in those boots and charm the hair off the teacher. I would pay to see that."

"Mhm." But Victoria was looking at the teacher, sizing her up, wondering whether she would be worth Victoria's attention. Chelsea looked at the teacher, narrowed her eyes, and wondered whether she could keep the boys in line.

"So, welcome everyone!" The teacher sounds actually enthusiastic. "I'm Ms. Lewis, I love mushrooms, and I'll be your teacher for the rest of the year. Sound good?"

The class gives a halfhearted "yes". Ms. Lewis shakes her head. "Nope. Won't do. I want to hear excitement! Happiness! We're going to have so much fun together!"

The class managed to pull together for a "YES!" and went straight back to being moody teenagers. Ms. Lewis sighed. "Well, some work will have to be done here. Fortunately, I have the perfect solution!"

Chelsea muttered to Victoria, "Please don't let the perfect solution be to dance."
Victoria snorted in response.

"For our first break-the-ice task, I'll be handing out pieces of paper. On this paper, I want you to write the name of a book—or a series—that either moved you, or changed your life. And I don't want to hear any "but I don't like reading!" because if I do, I will personally write out a list of books you'll need to read pass this grade. Or, you can choose to write a five page essay explaining to me why mushrooms are the best food on the planet."

The entire class muttered about the unfairness of that. Even Chelsea and Victoria couldn't help but give an opinion.
"Wow, that sounds exactly like something Rin would do if she ever became a teacher."
"I know right. I think she might be in league with her or something. How else can one come up with such an assignment?"

At that moment, the teacher walks by them, dropping two pieces of paper on their desks. Both girls went quiet until the teacher passed. But the teacher wasn't yet out of earshot when the door opened and someone walked in. "Oh my god! Was I late? I'm so sorry!"
