I have no idea how long I have been here. Staring at the blank walls for hours on end. Blair comes in everyday to get information out of me. He doesn't succeed because I still don't know why I'm here. The only thing that Blair has given away is that all of this has something to do with his family. All the spare time has got me thinking about my family, or the people I thought were my family anyway. All that time and little did I know we weren't even related.
A tear falls from my eye as I think back to the night I left.
The glow off my phone dimly lights up my room while I snuggle in the warmth of my doona cover. Just as I get to the most exciting part of the book that I am reading I feel the sudden urge to go to the bathroom. I quickly roll out of bed, a little too fast, as I land on the flour with a thud and my head starts to spin. I slowly get up, making sure I don't end up on the ground again. When I finally regain my balance I walk out of my room towards the bathroom.
After I am finished I get halfway down the hall towards my room when I hear my name whispered from within the lounge room. I peek around the corner to see my mum and dad sitting on the couch both with their backs towards me. I position my head so that I can hear what they are saying without being seen.
"I think we should tell her, she needs to know", my dad said.
"What she doesn't know wont hurt her", my mum argued quietly.
"Know what?", I mumble quietly to myself so that they wouldn't hear.
"She was only tiny when i found her on the doorstep, we still don't know what happened to her real parents. She would be heartbroken".
They only thing I can hear is my heart thudding loudly in my chest as the realisation of what my mother had just said finally sunk in. Or could I even call her that? My breathing quickened.
Was it true?
I quickly made my way to my room shutting the door a little too loudly behind me. I don't care if they heard me, I am leaving. Im not sure where I am going yet but at the moment anywhere is better than being in a house surrounded by liars. "I cant believe they didn't tell me", I say to myself while trying to hold back the tears that are threatening to fall. With shaky hands and blurry eyes I frantically grab an overnight bag and start filling it with my belongings. Once it is full i pull on some jeans and a random t-shirt and slip my feet into my favourite pair of joggers. After grabbing my phone off my bedside table I carefully open the glass sliding door to my balcony. I step outside with my bag slung over my shoulder. Suddenly, the cold breeze hits me sending a shiver through my body. Now aware of the freezing temperature outside, I quickly step back into my room to find my favourite green hoodie sprawled out on the floor. I pick it up and slip it of over my head before walking back out onto the balcony. I adjust the strap on my overnight bag and reach out to grab the closest branch of the oak tree outside my window.
Finally after picking my way through the branches my feet hit the ground with a soft thud. As quietly as i can manage I make my way through the front yard and make my way down the road at a fast walking pace.
***********
I wasn't sure where I was going at first but now I know as I stand below my best friend's bedroom window. I search around my feet and pick up a small pebble that has spilled out of the garden. With a fair amount of oomph I throw the pebble up towards the window and let out a sigh of frustration when it hits the bricks a metre or so to the right. "Damn!", I whisper-hiss as I try to find a another pebble to throw. "Kara?", I look up as Tyson's face appears in the window with a very concerned expression. "What are you doing here?", His eyes dart down to the bag sitting on my hip and although I didn't think it was possible his face shows more concern than before. What happened!?", He asks with his eyebrows furrowed together making cute little wrinkles on his forehead. The thought nearly brings a smile to my face. Nearly. "I will fill you in after you help me up". Tyson reaches down as far as he can and links his hands with mine before using all of his strength to pull me up. "Wow you're strong", I say without thinking. "I know", he states, flexing his arm muscles. He then takes it a little too far by kissing his right tricep, "oh get a room!", I say a little too loudly. "What?", "are you jealous?, he asks wriggling his eyebrows. I roll my eyes and slap him lightly on the arm before pushing past him and collapsing onto his bed. "Just make yourself at home", he says, sarcasm dripping from every word. "Thanks I will", I say with a grin as Tyson chuckles while shaking his head. "So what happened?", He asks again his expression changing to concern like before. My smile drops into a small frown. Just as I am feeling slightly better Tyson goes and ruins it by reminding my why I was sad in the first place. I sit up and let out a shaky sigh as I look down to my hands in my lap, fresh tears stinging the back of my eyes. He sits down next to me and wraps an arm around my shoulder pulling me closer to his chest. I shouldn't be mad at him he is only trying to help. I start to relay what happened earlier down to every little detail.
By the time I am finished my tears are flowing freely leaving warm trails down my cheeks while I snuggle deeper into the safety of Tyson's arms.
