Silence Haven: Beginning of the End (Book 1)

Grounded with a Side of Zombies

I'm not really sure why we let Sarai talk us into writing this journal of everything that is happening. I guess it makes sense. If anyone survives this and gets rid of all the chaos, the world will at least know some of what happened in this small town.

I'm Dakota Bailey, just your average teenage boy. At least, I was until this whole crazy thing started. Now I'm the leader of a small group of teenagers and a little girl. Were just trying to make it to the next day. In case you haven't caught on yet, the world is slowly ending. I should probably go back to the beginning so no one is confused anymore.

Yesterday started out like any other Texhoma Tuesday. My group of friends was in our regular position of being grounded. That being said, our parents decided to go on a camping trip and leave us all with our friend Robyn's little sister, Failyn, and her babysitter, Toma. It was crazy boring since we weren't allowed to go out and cause trouble all over town. We were stuck watching our friend Cove fail at flirting with that rude Toma chick. It was funny for the first few minutes of her ignoring him completely, but we grew bored. My twin brother had finally grabbed hold of Cove and we guys went upstairs to Robyn's room. Soon after shutting the door, we heard the town sirens going off, which wasn't really strange. The sirens went off every Tuesday night to call for the town meeting, but it was kind of early for that. For some reason, none of us thought that was weird. The door slammed open as my two sisters ran in. They were both talking so fast that I couldn't understand most of it, so we turned to Sarai, knowing she would clear things up. The mute girl was waving her hands around, signing like crazy. The only words I got were 'zombies' and 'dead lady on T.V'. We all got up and went to the living room to see Toma staring at the T.V. with her usual slack-jawed expression.

The news was on, which never happened in this house. That's not the creepiest thing, though. The creepiest part is that the reporter lady was covered in blood. Her eyes were glazed over and blood dripped from her mouth as she staggered towards the cameraman who seemed just as confused as we were. The lady lunged at the camera, which fell to the ground as we heard the cameraman screaming. It was silent before anyone even thought to get Robyn's little sister out of the room. It was a shock for everyone in the room. I finally moved, turning the T.V. off to make the disturbing screams and moaning stop.

"Zombies, it's the only explanation." The familiar voice of my craziest sister finally said. We all turned to Trently after she spoke.

"Trenny, zombies aren't real. They are just something someone came up with to scare people." I tried to reason with my sister. Everyone nodded, though we all knew that these had to be zombies of some sort. As usual, I was the one to take over at the sight of my friends worry and panic.

"Alright, Trenny, pack as much food as you can. Robyn, pack clothes and blankets. Branton, give me a hand is collecting all the nerf swords, axes, and Robyn's collection of baseball bats." I ordered.

Everyone shot to work like they always did when I gave orders. My twin brother started running up the stairs to get the nerf weapons. I'm not even sure if they would help much against zombies, but we needs as many weapons as we could get.

I quickly shook my head to clear it, then ran upstairs to Robyn's room. I opened his second walk-in closet and sighed when I saw his huge collection of baseball bats that his dad always bought him if he behaved for a few days. Grabbing as many as I could, I made my way back downstairs and almost crashed into Toma.

"Dakota, what is going on?" she whined. I rolled my eyes at her annoying whining. "Pretty sure we just said it earlier. Zombies, Toma. Zombies!" I said dramatically. I then walked past the upset girl and made my way to the door and leaned the bats against the wall. A bag overflowing with nerf weapons sat there, as well.
