I Trust No One

I was looking at my watch, it read a quarter past 11. The guards were out patrolling the castle at this hour. They were circling the castle like their life depended on it with every step they took. They knew with the threat of rebels that they must protect the royal family at all costs. I am currently hiding in a bush, honestly no surprise there, I have always been a rule breaker. I hit into a thorn bush, I could see the blood trickling down my arm with an evil vengeance as I let out a small whispered cry of pain. I took a deep breath, feeling my stomach rise and fall with every inhale and exhale. I held onto the necklace I was wearing, it was gold with a little inscription on it that read, ad astra per aspera which means "through adversity to the stars" in a old language called Latin. My mother had given me this necklace right before she died. I looked right at the stars in the sky. My mom always believed in my that I could overcome my adversities and prevail through it all.

I do have an adversity at the moment, you see I have fallen in love with a girl. Not just any girl, but a selected girl. I have fallen in love with a girl who's fate is being decided for her, but I will no let that happen. We have been secretly dating for a few weeks now. She meets me in the garden around 11:45 sharp, to be exact. I don't know how she gets to the garden with out anyone knowing honestly her maids are always on her. America Singer is her name, she is the most stunning woman I have ever met. Her smile is as bright as the sun, her skin is as smooth as silk. Her hair is as red as honey and roses. Her eyes are as blue as the waves of South Carolina.  Every time she walked into a room she gave me these butterflies in my stomach, it is the most amazing feeling I have ever felt before.  She is my one. I know Maxon, the soon king of Illéa, has fallen for America, but it doesn't seem like she has fallen for him.  I am worried however that she has taken a liking to the other 15 girls still left in the stupid selection.  I hate the selection, I just want America to be mine.  I want to have what everyone else has, I want to kiss America into the night with no one watching us.

Just then, a cat appeared at the end of the line of bushes. The cat looked at me with its green eyes in amusement.
"Go away kitty, sheeeeee, please be quiet," I said quietly. The cat did not listen and a great hissing sound came out of the cats mouth. The sound could be heard from not only a mile away, but like 10,000 miles, I am not being sarcastic about that by the way. Guards rushed out from their station outside the castle and rushed to the bushes. I felt a cold hand touch my shoulder.
"My name's Aspen, I can get you out of here, if you trust me," whispered the deep voiced guard.
"How do I know I can trust you and that you are not going to just bring me to the king to get killed," I said.
"Just trust me, we have to go, they're going to spot us soon enough," Aspen said pulling my arm. Aspen seemed genuine and kind, but I still don't trust him, but then again I don't trust anyone, ever. We ran in the opposite directions of the other guards, hiding near different bushes and trees when they were seemingly close on our trail.
"What did you say your name was again," Aspen said with curiosity.
"I didn't, it's Lyra, Lyra Banner," I said.
"Well, Miss Lyra Banner, do you trust me?" He asked.
"Not a chance," I said with great certainty, a grin had appeared on my face.
