Daniel walked in with a little hop in his step not from excitement, but from quite the opposite, anger. Daniel hated the feeling of having to attend a new school. He didn't want to move, but he didn't have a choice. This was the third time he moved and he was tired of it. It was already almost a week into the new school year and he was just now arriving.
Despite his anger he couldn't help but be nervous, moving to a completely new place in the middle of nowhere tends to do that to a person.
Daniel was never known for punctuality but first days were different - his brain tends to get jumbled, palms sweaty, and butterflies tend to occupy his stomach for what seems like hours, but at the moment he was okay.
He decided to show up to school 20 minutes early to assure himself a seat, he hated the feeling of everyone's eye drifting to the new kid. Daniel showed up at the school that resembled an old-looking church, looking at the grim building he sighed.
"Here goes nothing." Daniel looked at the paper in hand that contained a list of classes.
A 104 - English read the first class on the list.
After several minutes of roaming around and being too stubborn to ask anyone where the class is he finally found the room with 10 minutes to spare. Daniel's eyes went wide in surprise when he opened the door - the class was small, really small, and almost every seat was already taken. Daniel scanned the room noticing there were three seats open, two in the middle, the other in the back. Daniel usually sat in the back, but something came over him whether it be nerves, intuition, or pure laziness, he found himself sitting at the desk in the middle of the room. Daniel received some looks from his surrounding classmates. He returned their looks with a hard glare.
He didn't like it here.
A young slim woman walked in, binder in hand. "Hello class, if you haven't noticed already we've received a new student." The red-headed teacher said while making eye contact with Daniel giving a friendly smile.
"Would you mind standing up and introducing yourself?" She asked.
Daniel hated being in the spotlight. He slowly stood up when the door swung upon. Everyone's attention turned to the blonde-headed girl. She wore a striped blue skirt with a matching top and blazer strutted in without a care in the world.
Daniel suddenly thought.. maybe this year won't be so bad.
The teacher gave the girl almost an accusing look. "This is the third time this week Ali." She held up her hand in surrender.
"Sorry, Ms. Rogers." The girl sighed.
The teacher just nodded "Take a seat."
The girl took the seat in the back eyeing Daniel on the way.
Not more than 5 seconds later the door opened once again. From what Daniel could see the boy wore red and white converse, tattered blue jeans, a black undershirt with a red leather jacket, and thick headphones dangling around his neck. When he lifts his head up to address the teacher his blue eyes are revealed contrasting his blonde disheveled hair. His bag loosely hanging around one shoulder.
Maybe Daniel shouldn't have been so nervous considering all the latecomers. It seems like a trend for both of them.
"Johnny. Nice of you to grace us with your presence.." Ms. Rogers said in an annoyed voice a totally different tone she took with Ali. I snickered at the teachers' sass. This action earned the attention of the blonde-haired boy.
The boy simply gave Daniel a smirk while striding up to him. The boy's blue eyes connect with his chestnut brown ones. Daniel was slightly shorter than this boy. Despite Daniel's unwavering stance against his new classmate on the inside, Daniel could feel the inevitable butterflies rise in his stomach. He didn't want to fight on the first day of school.
Not again.
"You're in my seat" centimeters away from each other Daniel could almost feel the warmth of his opponent. Their eyes were locked in combat. Blondie seemed confident in himself and Daniel didn't like bullies like him, so he held his stare.
After what seemed like forever a voice cut through the thick air "Daniel was their first Lawrence, as they say, the early bird gets the worm. Go to the back."
Daniel remained planted in his spot, Johnny's eyes still glued to his. Johnny finally gave a hmph, pushing Daniel's shoulder as he passed him, Daniel kept his eyes on the obvious bully of the school. Once johnny sat down Daniel turned back around and sat down in his chair assuming his introduction was more than over.
"Don't worry about him," Daniel turned to his side to see where the delicate voice came from. He almost forgot the blonde girl he saw enter earlier. Ali?
Daniel gave a nod. "Bullies don't scare me."
"He's not really a bad guy." She whispered back before Ms. Rogers gave her a look and both Daniel and her straightened up giving her their attention.
Daniel was wondering if Ali had just seen what had happened. Ali is vouching for this Johnny guy for whatever reason, but he didn't care to get close enough to find out if what she said was true.
Despite his earlier interaction with this so-called Johnny, Daniel's first day goes off without a hitch.
