Natasha, Barry, Dad, and I walked into the room where Fury's dead body was laid out.

Fury's dead body.

Fury.

Tears were going down my cheeks as I examined his dead body. Natasha joined as Maria walked in.

"I need to take him." Natasha walked up to me again but this time dad and Barry were watching us. Natasha grabbed my arm and pulled me out of the room.

"Natasha." My dad started. She didn't respond. Instead she continued to pull me out into the hallway.  "Natasha!" Dad said again.

"Why was Fury in your apartment?" She asked me.

"I-I don't know." I said nervously. We were interrupted by Rumlow. "Cap, they want you back at SHIELD."

"Yeah, give us a second." Natasha said.

"They want him now."

"Okay. Come on Brooklyn." Natasha let go of me. "You're a terrible liar" she grabbed Barry and they walked in the opposite direction.

As we were walking, I heard Jasper Sitwell on Rumlow's ear piece. "STRIKE team, escort Captain Rogers and his daughter back to SHIELD immediately for questioning."

"I told him." Rumlow said. Dad noticed the vending machine next to us. I then saw him walking towards Rumlow. "Let's go." He said.

Did he have a plan? What was going on? Even more questions were circling around in my head. "Yeah"Rumlow then to the agents. "STRIKE, move it out" As we left, I saw that Dad  hid the flash drive behind a pack of gums in the vending machine.

"For whatever it's worth, you did your best." Alexander Pierce was talking to Kate. If that's even her real name.

Yeah I'm pissed at her right now. Dad is too.

"Thank you, sir." She then turned to leave and saw us. "Captain Rogers. Little Rogers"

"Neighbor." Dad replied coldly as we walked towards Pierce.

"Ah, Captain. Little Captain. I'm Alexander Pierce." He said. "Sir, it's an honor." They shook hands and then we did.

"The honor is mine, Captain. My father served in the 101st. Come on in" We entered Pierces office and he showed us an old photo of him and Fury. "That photo was taken five years after Nick and I met. When I was at State Department in Bogota. ELN rebels took the embassy, and security got me out, but the rebels took hostages. Nick was deputy chief for the SHIELD station there. And he comes to me with a plan. He wants to storm the building through the sewers. I said, "No, we'll negotiate." Turned out the ELN didn't negotiate, so they put out a kill order. They stormed the basement, and what did they find? They find it empty. Nick had ignored my direct order and carried out an unauthorized military operation on foreign soil. He saved the lives of a dozen political officers, including my daughter." He said.

"So you gave him a promotion." Dad said assuming.

"I've never had any cause to regret it. Ms. Rogers, why was Nick in your apartment last night?" He asked me.

"I don't know." I said quietly. "You know it was bugged?" He asked.

"I did, because Fury told me." It was probably best I told him the truth anyways.

"Did he tell you he was the one who bugged it?"

I chose not to reply. I didn't know this information. Why would he bug it? UGH MORE QUESTIONS. My head was starting to hurt. "I want you to see something." He brought up footage of Batroc being interrogated.

"Who hired you, Batroc?" A SHIELD agent asked.

"Is that live?" Dad asked.

"Yeah, they picked him up last night in a not-so-safe house in Algiers."

"Are you saying he's a suspect? Assassination isn't Batroc's line." Dad said. He knew what he was talking about...I think.

"No, it's more complicated than that. Batroc was hired anonymously to attack the Lemurian Star and he was contacted by e-mail and paid by wire transfer. And then the money was run through seventeen fictitious accounts, the last one going to a holding company that was registered to a Jacob Veech."

Pierce then handed me a file. "Am I supposed to know who he is?" I asked him. "Not likely. Veech died six years ago. His last address was 14-35 Elmhurst Drive. When I first met Nick his mother lived at 14-37."

"Are you saying Fury hired the pirates? Why?" MORE QUESTIONS! SERIOUSLY?!

"The prevailing theory was that the hijacking was a cover for the acquisition and sale of classified intelligence. The sale went sour and that led to Nick's death."

"If you really knew Nick Fury you'd know that's not true." I butted in.

"Why do you think we're talking? See, I took a seat on the Council not because I wanted to but because Nick asked me to, because we were both realists. We knew that despite all the diplomacy and the handshaking and the rhetoric, that to build a really better world sometimes means having to tear the old one down. And that makes enemies. Those people that call you dirty because you got the guts to stick your hands in the mud and try to build something better. And the idea that those people could be happy today, makes me really, really angry. " he hesitated for a moment.  "Brooklyn and Cap, you were the last one to see Nick alive. I don't think that's an accident, and I don't think you do either. So I'm gonna ask again, why was he there?"

Dad looked at me. "He told me not to trust anyone." I said. "wonder if that included him." I paused for a moment before replying.

"I'm sorry. Those were his last words." I said. "Excuse us." Dad grabbed his shield and put it on his back. He then pulled me out of my chair and we started making our way out of the office.

"Captain." Dad stopped and looked at Pierce. "Somebody murdered my friend and I'm gonna find out why. Anyone gets in my way, they're gonna regret it. Anyone."

"Understood"
