~ The Principle ~ (Simon/JJ)

Start from the beginning

"I can do this all day." Simon spoke quietly but confidently.

He knew not to fight back with anyone as it would leave him in worse shape than if he had. JJ went in for another punch but before his fist had the chance to touch Simons delicate face his arm was grabbed by someone, even though Simon was relieved he didn't want to show it...he didn't want to seem weak even though he knew he was. They both slowly lifted their heads to see where this arm had come from and stood before them was their headteacher, Mr Mackenzie.

"This is the last time I will tolerate such behaviour Olajide, get to my office now!"

JJ pulled his arm away from his grip and stormed off through the crowd towards the school, Simon finally let out a relieved sigh and felt a few tears prick his swollen eyes.

"Now Simon, why don't you get yourself cleaned up in first aid and make your way up to my office. I want to sort this out between you and Olajide before he does worse damage." Mr Mackenzie told him softly.

"Thank you sir."

They heard the faint sound of the school bell from the building in the distance indicating the end of lunch.

"Everyone, get to your classes now!" He exclaimed at the group that was gathered around them.

Simon slowly made his way to the first aid room as his small legs trembled below him fearing he'd collapse at any second, he eventually made his way to the first aid room where they managed to clean up most of the blood and patched up the damage JJ caused. Once they finished sorting him out, Simon steadily made his way up the flight of stairs that led up to the head teachers office and saw JJ sat on one of the chairs that was set up outside the room. He took a deep breath in and made his way over to him then sat down on the chair opposite him, he didn't dare look at him because if he did then he'd get a mouthful of swear words shouted at him. Thankfully, the head teacher came out not long after Simon arrived so they didn't have to sit there awkwardly waiting.

"Olajide, Simon. Please step into my office." He said in a calming voice.

The both stood up and JJ walked in first with Simon and Mr Mackenzie not far behind. They both sat on the two chairs in front of his desk as Mr Mackenzie sat down in his own chair, he didn't want to scare them so tried to deal with this in the calmest way possible.

"As you both know this is a very serious situation that can't be taken lightly, I don't know what exactly happened between you two or why this fight started but we need to take serious action to this. Would one of you like to explain exactly what happened?"

Simon didn't dare speak and hoped JJ would speak up, but he didn't. This gave Simon no choice, he had to speak up.

"It was my fault sir." Simon lied, they both looked at him stunned. Simon wasn't the sort to get into fights let alone start one, JJ was shocked but was also slightly relieved he had taken the blame. "I said something that accidentally set him off which I didn't know about, he started beating me up and I let him. I deserved it."

JJ was almost brought to tears, no one had ever taken the blame for him before. Especially someone who didn't know him that well.

"Right, well...thank you Simon for admitting to your mistake. Obviously we do have to take action with both of you for this, even if you didn't mean to start the fight. You will both be suspended for a week but work will still be sent home for you to do, every day during break or lunch you have to sit with each other alone and get to know each other then we'll see what happens from there. Does that sound like a good idea?"

They both nodded in agreement but they knew deep down they were dreading it, they didn't know it then but that fight would change their lives.

*fast forward to 2021*

JJ and Simon were sat on the sofa in the flat they shared watching football when Simon got a notification through his phone, he looked at it and smiled. It was a picture from his mum, it was of his diary from year 7. As he read the writing a sudden burst of realisation hit him, it wasn't just any old diary entry his mum sent him....it was the day him and JJ became friends.

"Oh my god...." Simon said out loud.

"What?" JJ asked as his attention was drawn away from the tv.

"Look what my mum just sent me, it's my diary from when I was in year 7. The day you beat me up." He told him as he showed him his phone.

"Oh my god no way, that's sick!!"

"I can't believe she still has it, especially after almost 18 years."

"Wow 18 years, I can't believe we've known each other that long."

"Imagine you hadn't beaten me up that day, we probably wouldn't be where we are today."

"When you put it like that, that's insane."

"Do you remember why you even beat me up that day?"

"No." He replied with a laugh.

"Well it's good you did, I probably wouldn't be where I am today if it weren't for you."

Simon smiled at JJ and he gave him a smile back, they weren't good at expressing their feeling but they didn't need to.

They knew they were incredibly grateful for each other.
