Preface

Kate dug in her pocket for the lock pick and when her fingers closed around the little piece of metal she turned around and waver to Mr. Casser the teacher who had drove her home, because her mom 'forgot'. He put a waving hand out the window at her and reversed the car. Kate was pretty sure that he was desperate to get out of the ghetto that she lived in. The ghetto didn't really scare Kate anymore since she had been living here for seven years. She skillfully picked the lock on her apartment door and swung it open, breathing in the smoke of whatever her mom had last smoked. She closed the door behind her and screamed,

"I'm home!"

There was no answer, but that wasn't unusual. She was surprised to see a light on in the kitchen, she dropped her bag and walked in. There was a small envelope and a little note that said,

Be back soon.

              -Mom

Kate opened the envelope to three hundred dollars. She felt her eyes grow as she became over come with fear. Her mother had left. This scared her, she was used to her mother being away for a night or two. But she had never expected her to really leave. She knew her mother wanted her, because otherwise she would have left Kate with her grandparents years ago when they begged for her to. Kate remembered her mom pulling her out of her grandmother's hands and shoving her into the taxi.

"She's my child and I can raise her, Mom," her mother had said.

Kate knew that likeliness was her mother want coming back. She took the three hundred out of her envelope and shoved it into her pocket. Grabbing her lock pick she walked out of the apartment, not even bothering to lock the door behind her.
