"Do you want some slumberberry tea?"

"Do you want to leave your room?"

"Do you want to see your parents?"

"How are you feeling, Brant?"

"We love you."

"Please say something."

"Brant?"

"Brant!"

"Brant."

The voices drifted into his consciousness. In, out. Among the screams.

More voices than one.

Braaaaant.

You faaaaaaailed.

You failed heeeeeeer.

You kiiiiiiiilled her.

"My fault. My fault," he mumbled.

Thump. Thump. Thump.

He rocked back and forth. His head hit the icy wall.

Thump. Thump. Thump.

The heat touched his neck, his brow, his hands. It begged him to let it in.

Heat. Fire. He wouldn't use it.

He'd promised.

He wouldn't use... it...

A flame sparked to life, just above his finger. It brought lucidity back to him.

But no. That wasn't right. The flames had always obscured his thoughts, not unveiled them. They'd always distracted, always controlled him.

They were bad. They'd made him... made him do it...

He groaned as her screams returned, louder than before.

"I... I promised...," he whispered, pressing his finger against his stomach. It clenched as the fire burned him, but he pressed again.

And again.

And again.

He relished the pain.

He deserved it. That's what he'd done to her. He'd hurt her.

Press.

Press.

Press.

Let gooooooooooo, the heat murmured.

But he couldn't.

He couldn't live without her.

So he gave himself the scars he felt inside.
