Katana and Wakizashi are two of most popular traditional Japanese Swords. They both originated in Feudal Japan following the advent of the smaller Tanto. They have many similarities and differences.

Both Katana and Wakizashi have similar shape and design. Both swords featured a single curved edge. Basically, this curvature improves the cutting power by reducing vibrations.
Another similarity, Katana and Wakizashi were made with a forging technique known as differential hardening. The purpose is to make a strong sharp edge while leaving the opposite edge somewhat flexible.

However, there are clearly many differences between Katana and Wakizashi, the most notable one is their length. Most Wakizashi featured a blade length of 30 to 60 cm, whereas Katana featured a blade length of 60 to 73 cm.

Another significant differences between them is their purpose. Katana was used as a primary weapon, while Wakizashi was used as a secondary backup weapon, in case samurai broke their Katana. Also, Katana don't work well in tight place, so samurai used Wakizashi instead.

In conclusion, these weapons have their own charateristics and can be used in certain conditions. While there are some similarities, such as shape, design and forging process, there are significant differences, mainly their length and their purpose. Both Katana and Wakizashi are still extremely fascinating. Just delving into the nature of both weapons will allow you to uncover more history and interesting information about each.
