Cory asked for the summary of the last week's lectures and Subomi did that in just 30 minutes. The guy was a freaking genius. Cory understood most of it and he zoned out during the rest.
Subomi told him his partner would be Joanne Gyles and he directed Cory's view to her. She had dark hair that looked malnourished and thin. It had a dull look. What struck him most were her hazel brown eyes. They were so dull, like she had been crying a lot or just sleep deprived, followed by the bags drooping underneath them.
Joanne didn't seem like the healthiest person or even healthy at all. And the expressionless face she wore was something he could never imagine on a face as pretty as her's. She seemed so lifeless.
Subomi explained more things about her and Cory couldn't help but wonder how he got those information. Anyway, he was glad Subomi did. It was to his advantage afterall. Cory liked having control over things, he was creepy like that.
He saw her go after the lecturer and followed. He had to talk to her too. Cory would probably just dump all the work on her but he still needed to sort things out and know exactly what was happening. He hated not being sure, especially when he was involved.
When Cory heard her say she wanted to change partners. Hell, I'd like to see her try.
He gets to decide whether he wanted to change partners or not. That was his decision. Not some gloomy weirdo wannabe.
Joanne.
"Get the bags Chloe." Joanne growled at her younger sister as she sluggishly went towards the cab and took out a big purple bag before entering the house.
"You have two hands, and I don't know what they're for." Chloe mumbled.
Little piece of shit, wait till I get my hands on you.
Joanne payed the cab man, and loaded her remaining stuff off the car. She had to board a cab because it was break and needed a ride home. She couldn't afford a car so whenever she had to get off hostel ground, either she called an Uber or trek even though she had her driver's license.
They had two months before they went back to school. For now Joanne would love to enjoy her stay at home, where they were not confined and could consume as much as they wanted without receiving death glares from the lunch lady.
Yesterday was quite uneventful. Since it was Sunday they didn't have any classes, Pat woke up with a severe migraine and hangover. They talked things out. Joanne really wanted to help anyway she could.
Pat explained everything to her. How she started dating this boy, how the guy was a fuckboy but she was willing to put up with him because she loved him.
The only information she withheld was his name. Now Joanne wasn't going to fight him or anything but she sure as hell wanted to give him a piece of her mind and Pat wasn't having any of that.
Then Patricia went off to have breakfast with her clique, leaving Joanne all alone with her thoughts. Just how she liked it to be. She sat in for an anime - enn enn no shoubutai - fire force, it had only 24 episodes so she watched them all, before catching up on some studying.
The cab ride was a three hour's trip, so she had to be up by five and that was the most depressing thing to happen to her that day but she was sure there was more at home, especially now that Chloe was out of rehab.
Chloe had gotten in for doing drugs. Something that was very illegal and would obviously have legal consequences but the judge was graceful enough to have her sent to a home for troubled youths. Also she was fifteen at the time so there wasn't really much of an option.
"Where's mom?" Joanne asked gasping for air. She didn't know there was so much stuff to carry.
"At work. She said to call her when you get home." Chloe smiled. She dropped a box off in her room.
"Thanks." Joanne pulled Chloe in for a hug before giving her a wedgie. "And that's for earlier." She smiled.
Chloe winced in pain before storming off.
After getting comfortable, Joanne took out the dialer and put in her mom's number. It beeped twice and on the second trial she could hear the receiver's voice.
"Hello."
"Hey Mom."
"Oh my God, Joanne is that you?"
"Yeah mom it's me, I hear you're at work?"
"Yes, unfortunately the doctor's supposed to come in for today's and tomorrow's shifts got in an accident so I and Ms. Diane are covering for them..."
"And you won't be home till Tuesday." Joanne finished for her.
"I'm really sorry Joanne, I wanted to be home when you arrived but I just couldn't..."
"No I get it, it's the nature of your job." Joanne cut in again.
"I'm really sor..." Joanne hung up. There was only so much bullshit one could tolerate. She wiped her eyes and went back to the room. It had been a long day and her stomach was growling at her.
Joanne made popcorn and sat in for a movie, Bird box. Pat said it had a lot of reviews and it made top ten last week. Closing the door shut, Joanne started the movie. But halfway she fell asleep because she couldn't focus on whatever it was that they were saying.
On waking up it was six in the evening. Joanne had slept for nine hours and that was not part of her schedule but she'd allow it.
She hadn't been sleeping well due to school and other things. Her stomach was yet growling at her again, and this time Joanne knew she had to eat actual food so she strolled eargerly to the kitchen.
She met Chloe there, making bacon. "Oh wow, who taught you how to cook?"
"I learnt it online back in rehab." Chloe smiled.
Joanne choked on air. "You what? They let you use your phones in there? Sounds like mini escape from school."
Chloe chuckled. "Let's just say it's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be."
Joanne nodded. "Definitely, but really though, are you okay?"
"I should be the one asking you that." Chloe turned to look at her.
Joanne frowned. "What does that mean?"
"I don't know, I guess ever since Laura died, you've been detached, more than your usual self."
Joanne sighed. This particular conversation was the bane of her existence. Why wouldn't people stop telling her these things? Why won't they just let her be and not bring up the subject?
"Isn't that what you're supposed to be when you lose someone you lov..." She mentally scolded herself for almost using the word 'love', "care about?"
"Yeah but you learn to move on with your life. Be happy." Chloe became sad this time.
"Oh and you are?"
"As a matter of fact, yes I am. I made friends and I moved on."
"Well good for you." Joanne took a spoonful of eggs and placed it beside the bacons in her plate.
"You know I'm right Joanne, you're just being stubborn." Chloe said.
She raised her middle finger and slammed the door. What a problematic child! Even if Chloe was right, which she was not by the way, Joanne couldn't just act like Laura didn't die. She couldn't act like everything was fine and forget that something did happen, she just couldn't.
Joanne continued the movie where she left off and couldn't help but be mad at the ending. Why were Olivia and her child so dumb? If they could still see partially through the blindfold, then what's the whole point of this movie? They should be dead!
Joanne closed her eyes, cussing whoever wrote the script for this movie when a message came in.
