Two months passed in a blink.
Secretary Ross followed in on Kallisto's favour and kept her family out of the business. His team sent in letters occasionally to her parents and brother, simple things like her passing her classes, making new friends. Her gifts were never mentioned or remembered by the Rumena family. She never saw the letters the team sent out, but she received every letter sent back and kept them clipped together in her top draw of her dresser.
During her time of staying at SHIELD's facility, she learned more about her gifts; she barely scratched the potential she had, and spent most of her time in one of the training rooms learning even more control and expanding her knowledge on different studies. One of newer things she learned about her gifts was her ability to remember everything she read and heard, much like an eidetic memory, but as one of the agents who supervised her training, called it "a mind that has a database with an endless storage". She took advantage of it and learned a few languages and some medical practices.
On the occasion that she interacted with someone who wasn't privately working alongside her, she gained an acquaintance in one of the workers and best soldier James Rhodes. He spent most of his time flying out to different countries, but when he did drop in, he always made the time to talk with her.
Kallisto sent another blast of energy towards the robotic dummies, sending them crashing into the walls crushing their parts. She blew a strand of hair away from her face as she collected her breath. She had been nonstop training for six hours; it was tough, but the more she did it, the easier it got. She twisted her hands and the dummies sat up right, their parts popping back into place, and set them back on their stands.
"You're getting better at this."
Kallisto turned to the voice. Rhodes clapped his hands together as he stood by the door. He was smiling. Kallisto smiled back. "Thanks."
"I think I'm looking at a superhero in the making." Rhodes knew she hated the idea of being a hero, she thought the ones before her were plenty good enough without her getting caught in the mix.
"I think I'll leave that to you." She stood by him with her arms crossed at her chest. Rhodes nodded. He motioned for her to follow him. They walked quietly down the hall and to the living quarters. Kallisto was the only one who used it; everyone else who worked at the facility had a home to go back to, while Kallisto became a permanent resident. The large space had a teched out kitchen and living room, with multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, a meeting room with a massive screen.
Kallisto yanked open the fridge for a bottle of juice. Rhodes stood by the island, typing something quick on the countertop; a fading sound of a computer echoed throughout the space. Kallisto raised a brow "Why did you disable the comms?"
"Because I need to ask you a favour, and if Ross overheard he'd reprimand both of us."
Kallisto slowly put down the bottle. Rhodes was typically a serious person on a daily basis, but the tone of his voice and the mention of Ross buzzed Kallisto's curious side and she sat beside him. She flooded her mind, the closet people being four floors away; Ross was busy talking with people in his office, unaware of the disabled comms in the living quarters.
"What's the favour?"
Rhodes slid a screen from his spot on the counter over to Kallisto. It was a message, with the name of a king typed at the bottom, and the location of a country. She frowned at the vague request. "I don't get it."
"The in hiding Captain of America, dropped in at the doorsteps of Wakanda the other day. He's hiding the Winter Soldier to try and remove the brainwash that's been implanted into him; Ross doesn't know and that's the way it's gonna stay. T'Challa says the brainwash was completely out of his system, but they wanted to make sure, take a good look into his subconscious you know? But they can't get into contact with Wanda Maximoff because she's also in hiding and doing a damn good job of it."
"Should I really be informed of this information?"
Rhodes rolled his eyes and wiped the screen away. "You have the powers to rummage around inside James Barnes' head and see if it actually worked or if they weren't successful and they need to try again."
Kallisto furrowed her brows in confusion. She understood the favour and the general gist of it, but she felt a creep in her head that there was more to the story. "Let's say I agree to it, rummaging as you put it in this man's head, how am I going to explain to Ross that I've been volunteered for something that he can't know about and that he needs to agree to it?"
"Ross just thinks I'm taking you out for some in world experience to see the control you have, he was hesitant at first, but I pulled the superhero card and told him if he ever wanted you to work for him you'd need the interaction of being a superhero to make the decision first."
"So you're lying to your boss to help out two convicted criminals, and bringing me down with you?"
"Yes because I said I know a guy who can do this and you're that guy."
There's the point of the conversation. Kallisto rolled her eyes. She was correct in her hunch. She sighed and pushed away from the island. Rhodes stood back as well. He had a look of pleading, which was rare for the man.
"Are you sure this is, you know, safe?"
"We'll cross that bridge when we get there."
